Frankenbike, Cassette and Hub combo's.
« on: 24 April, 2017, 03:54:21 pm »

I've got a spare pair of 700c wheels that I built onto a pair of shimano mountain bike hubs, I'm not sure the specific model, but I think they are Deore 8 speed hubs (cost about 25 quid a each a few years back).

Is there any reason why I shouldn't be able to fit the 10 speed block from a shimano Tiagra 4700 groupset? It's the 11-32 cassette if that makes any difference. Will this work, or am I being woefully optimistic ?

Thanks

Do you know if its the same width? I put 10sp road cassette on a tiagra 8sp hub no probs, but never tried road on MTB hub

Deore 8spd hub should be 135mm OLN - pretty much a given if it's a disc hub. 8 & 9 spd cassettes are the same width. 10 spd cassettes used to need a 0.5mm spacer to fit on such a hub. I haven't yet fitted or removed a 4700 so not sure if this still applies but your LBS should have some if you need one. HTH.

Well now I'm in the same place as the wheels, I've checked, the writing on the hub says: "FH-M525 VIA M". Does that change the answer at all?

Thanks

I found it depended on the hub and cassette combination - I had three cassettes and three wheels, some combinations were very tight on the lock ring others needed a spacer, despite supposedly being equal
