Joff Summerfield's Penny-farthing World Tour

Come and hear Joff Summerfield talk about his adventure pedalling his handmade replica of a Victorian penny-farthing bicycle around the world.
During the trip he visited 23 countries in four continents; taking in landmarks including the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, Cambodia's Angkor Wat temple complex and the Grand Canyon.  He raced in the Penny-farthing World Championships in Australia and he crossed the Himalayas at 5,200m above sea level, reaching Everest base camp.
Joff is the first person to complete the circumnavigation on a penny-farthing since British-born Thomas Stevens, who completed the trip in 1887.
When and where:
Friday 6th January 2012 at The Gallery, 70 Cowcross St, London EC1M 6EJ (near Farringdon station).
Doors open 6 p.m. Refreshments will be available. Talk starts at 6.30 p.m.
All proceeds from ticket sales will go to Sustrans.
£7.00

Sounds very tempting. I think I might just be able to make that after work but I'd have to check with train times.
Where are tickets sold?

Joff is the man who built Charlotte's penny. A few of us visited his workshop and tried out some of his wares when he was based just outside Southend.

IIRC some of his photos were linked to YACF as he was a member of this forum for a while (may still be).

Where can one buy tickets?  Train times promise me I can leave class in preston and get there for 6.09...just!
I'd rather be on my wheels than under them...

Joff doesn't seem to have been around this forum for almost 12 months.  This is a picture which he posted in a thread that Charlotte started about her Ordinary, and at the time for some odd reason, Joff's image was not appearing reliably, so I reposted it from a server I control.  It's somewhat impressive. :o

Yes, that is the big one in the background.  If I can make it to this talk, I will.
Actually, it is rocket science.

Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

There was a question about this on this week University Challenge.  Neither team (St Peter's Oxford and Oxford Brooks) got it.  What do they teach them in schools these days?!

Paxo asked what means of transport Joff used to get around the world.

I suspect a fair proportion on here would've answered that correctly.

Sorry, I was  as usual talking rubbish.  Oxford Brooked buzzed correctly - what a shame they didn't win overall.  This is the precise question.

Oh, no.  I see from Facebook that Joff got mugged in Ecuador and his journey is over.

It sounds absolutely terrifying.

Just read it. Poor chap. Sounds absolutely dreadful. He does indeed sound lucky to be alive.
Certainly never seen cycling south of Sussex

The details on his facebook page are even more grim. He probably only survived due to tricking his captors into not tying him up as tightly as they thought.
