I don't need warning about Halford's service or reputation, heard it all a thousand times.  Despite all that some of their bikes do have a reasonable rep once you've gone round and retightened all the bolts. Frankly I've had to do that the last two bikes I bought from LBSs too so I'm cynical enough to have learned independence..

I've half arsedly contemplated buying a MTB in the past but can't justify the outlay. In fact I have no use at all for a mountain bike at the minute, but if this is genuinely a £600 spec bike for £270 then I'll find a use for it.

But I know nothing about MTBs, one MTB component looks exactly the same as all the others to me. So is this something they've concocted at an overprice just for reducing in the sale or does it look like reasonable value?

I'd say the spec is pretty average if it was selling for £600.

For example, this Specialized Hardrock is also very average spec - just 8 speed Shimano rubbish, but only retailed at £370 to start with before having the best part of 100 quid knocked off.

Those cable discs look nasty. You'd be better off with Vees...
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

Carrera bikes are usually OK, frames probably made by Merida.  Not the lightest but reasonably well designed.  The Apollo range, on the other hand, is landfill-in-waiting.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Nice one, thanks. I'll keep my eye out for that one dropping into a sale.
