Rear hub with NUTS!
« on: 13 July, 2017, 01:54:14 pm »
At some point I'm going to need a decent quality rear fixed gear flip flop hub; ideally 36H.  I want nuts not one of those Allen bolt jobbies.  What would the panel recommend?

Huh?  Remember I don't talk fluent fixed yet.

Huh?  I just want NUTS!  Two of them, one on each side, so I can use the fixie spanner you were admiring yesterday evening at the pubbe.

Do you want the hub to have 2 fixed cogs, or one fixed cog and a freewheel on the other side?

In any case, Joytech and Zenith do perfectly decent nutted hubs.

e.g. http://hubjub.co.uk/zenith-track-hub-slotted-high-flange-2322-p.asp

Or if you want fixed / free, there is the rather spendier Token down this page:

If you are talking about your new Pompino Steve, the OLN (over lock nut - distance - or the gap between your rear fork ends left and right, where the axle sits ) should be 120mm (stick a ruler in there with the wheel out to check).
I had the hubs for my Pomp made for me by BETD Ltd - Goldtec track hubs.
For some reason the OLN on older pomp frames (mine) is 135mm - but it was easy enough for BETD to make up spacers and a longer axle to match this.
However, the axle which I have from them, will only accept bolts - whether they're hex (for a spanner) or cap (for an allen key) head.
I'm sure they could make you an axle to accept nuts, but you'd need to talk to them about that.
Give Dan a call on 01782 629462.

ETA - Plucky's solution may be the easier way to get what you are after, and certainly nowhere near as spendy as BETD.

Historically, I really rated the On-One hubs, but looks like they don't make them any more. Shame - they're still going strong on one of my bikes, now re-deployed to #2 Son.

I have a 120mm Goldtec hub and a 135mm One One available at mates rates. On one is ok but a bit knackered. Works fine with new bearings.
Goldtec is nice but alu finish is a bit 'mottled. Laced to a Sputnik. You need to measure what you've got though.

Edit - just checked. BJ is 120mm

A good option. How much might the Goldtec / Sputnik wheel be?

Dunno. £50? Rim is pretty new . Finish on the hub isnt the greatest but runs really smooth. Probably best to have a gander first.

Sounds good.  Can I pop round after we get back from holidays?

My Goldtec flip-flop hub is great.

2 Allen bolts instead of 15mm nuts ...much more practical. It's never slipped.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

As mentioned upthread... This is what I have. It works, albeit not cheap.

I bought Christophe's wheel. It doesn't have NUTs but it'll be just fine. Thanks for all the advice.

Bought a set of these 10 years ago and they're still running strong.
