Taken from the train in bad weather.

And the carriage window's in a shocking state - that doesn't help.

That's right, Pingu. It's the one between Marykirk and North Craigo. Everybody knows that.  O:-)

Well I didn't! ;D

Whilst it looked familiar, I have never seen that one.  More bridges to look for in the future, then!

Some bridges from the last couple weeks: -

Old road bridge and rail bridge next to the A68 outside Jedburgh

I'm sure this doesn't need naming :)

and the road bridge to go with it: -

On the way to Aviemore up the old A9

Bridge over the railway next to the Dornoch firth

A footbridge somewhere along the north coast between Melvich and Tongue

Bridge on the Tongue causeway

This bridge was on the A894, I think just north of Unnapool

Billplumtree's bridge on the Lewis-Harris road (note difference in weather)

The bridge next to the Sligachan hotel on Skye

A 62 year old participant crosses a bridge during the 52 mile Cateran Yomp at the weekend.

Exciting brummie bridge news: The one on Dogpoo[l] Lane, posted previously in this thread:

...is about to come under long-term attack by molishers.  Something to do with reducing the risk of flooding, or drainage, or something.

Rumour has it that they're going to be mantling a temporary bridge for pedestrians, cyclists and the series of tubes carried beneath the surface of the existing one.  Being somewhat more on the ball than we were when they drove the rail bridge into place over the bypass last christmas, your resident Mad Recumbent Women™ will endeavour to actually take some photos.  If it ever stops bloody raining.

Looks to me like that was originally a single span flat arch bridge with no obstruction in the river. They have obviously had to add additional supports to the underside of the arch (the two concrete plinths and the steel joists) to achieve the current weight limit.

Bridges are notorious constrictions of rivers in spate as the roads are built above the flood level and are effectively dams across the flood plane with only the opening of the bridge to let the water through. Flooding upstream of a bridge is common.

To remove the additional supports will improve the capacity of the channel signifficantly but that would require replacing the bridge with a stronger flat structure or a hump back.

ETA

I must have ridden over that bridge dozens of times without realising that it had had to be strengthened underneath like that.

Yeah.  It took me a while to realise it was a bridge at all, let alone a slightly botched and rather pretty one.  I think it's because if you're riding along the path, you're inevitably concentrating on the upcoming bend and bollards, negotiating a path around any other users and checking to see if the road is clear.  I only really noticed the bridge when something gave me reason to stop there.

As for hidden bridges, this one:

is about half way up this road:

There are people who have been riding this road for most of their life and who now collect a pension who never realised there was a bridge there. It was taken out of service in about 1860 mind you..

What a fascinating structure and I'd never heard of it before. It's incredible to think of such huge engineering projects being carried out on waterways in the 21st century when they've long ceased to be a significant transport artery.

What is really amazing is how little power it uses to lift its load... it takes just 1.5 kW of electricity - the same as boiling a couple of kettles.

American kettles maybe.  Your typical BRITONS kettle has a sensible power output, compatible with making a proper cup of tea in a reasonable time frame.  Not that it matters - it's the same amount of energy after all - it's just that we tend not to use shaver plugs and bell wire to carry double the current, and make up for the resulting reduction in electrical fires with the distinctive nocturnal yelp-hop of someone treading on the business end of a BS1363 plug in bare feet.

But I digress.  The true BRITISH unit of power is the one bar electric fire, equivalent to 0.577milliDoubleDeckerBus-FootballPitchLengths/Fortnight.

I used to have a flatmate from Falkirk, a long time ago when I had flatmates, who ended up moving to Stroud, where I grew up - and yet I've never been to Falkirk. I must remedy this immediately! Perhaps a train-assisted bike adventure is called for.

That's one of my favourite bridges, that is.  Bonus points is you're halfway across when a train passes :)
