As the media seem to like the idea of a race, perhaps there's room for a prize fund. Maybe for the first to key points, such as 10,000 mile intervals, but from the beginning of the calendar year.
Funds could accumulate in an account, 50% could be paid as the target is reached, and the remainder when that rider passes the record within the calendar year.

I'll send a payment of £50 directly to the first rider to pass 10,000 miles in the calendar year, and another £50 once that rider has reached the Godwin record within the calendar year.
I'll not attach any special criteria to that. Although clearly anyone can be as capricious as they want in how they choose to judge achievement.

I felt like sending something to Kurt's crowd-funding thing. Then I remembered that I'd set conditions for that back in February. The idea back then was to reward Steve if he got to the Godwin record by 31st Dec, shadowed by Kurt.

I'd have paid out if Kurt had got to the record by the 31st, but it wasn't to be.
