[HAMR] 28th June - Teethgrinder Day 179
« on: 28 June, 2015, 09:38:42 am »
... and he's off, at quarter past nine.  Looks to be headed Fen-wards again.

Go Steve!
You are in a maze of twisty flat droves, all alike.

I managed to intercept Steve on the A10 at Littleport and rode to the other side of Ely with him. He said that he had intended a big day today, but had found the wind tiring. He had had a nap (at Magdalen?) and was feeling better. It still seemed that the wind was taking it's toll as his speed was lower than I'd expect.

I hope that having a bit of YACF shirted support raised his spirits - he certainly appeared pleased to see me:

Go STEVE!  :D
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is...

fboab: "Why is he wearing so much?"

Surely he's going to be in Summer Mode this week, with forecast highs in the 30s?  :o

Does Steve always ride without mitts?  He must have hands of leather!

I rode out to Harold country park this afternoon from MK, Steve went close by it this morning. Coming home was very hard against the wind. At the top of some raises I nearly came to a stop with the gusts. My wife who was drafting me didn't think it was that bad ::-)

I don't envy Steve on his ride back this evening

I rode "Flat Out in the Fens" sportive today in that general area. The wind was indeed both strong and gusty.

I think you will know that I am a serious Steve supporter --but 320kms a day is just not enough to be challenging Tommy's mileage. However Steve will on 1st Jan 2016 become UMCA 40/49 year old record holder - whether he does any more miles this year or not.

I have not sat down and worked the daily mileage needed now but I have a feeling it is around 250 - each and every day including November and December-- so  amazing as  banging out miles (way beyond anything I could contemplate )  actually is -- from now on it needs to be 250 miles a day

I've got it at 249.1 miles per day required (bottom of http://gicentre.org/oytt/) with his average so far this year at 160.5 mpd.

His average over the last three weeks, which has been his highest so far this year is 218 mpd, so while these alternating 250 / 200 days are undoubtedly impressive, they are not sufficient to bring him back to Godwin's WR pace. This looks like an impossible 2015 target to me, but I am hoping I am wrong.

Perhaps a more positive way of looking at things is that by this time Tommy required 221 mpd for the remains of the year, so Steve "only" needs to follow Tommy's pattern for the year but with a bonus 25 miles per day on top.

I really hope for Steve to break the record and of course it is still possible,  though now I expect he'll be relying not only on his immense strength of mind and body,  but also on favourable climactic conditions also.

That said,  there is only one record to break and that is Tommy Godwins,  any other age related records are simply statistics, of interest,  but not "The Record". In fact we have no idea who holds the "best" in their 40s as it has never been felt worthwhile to record.

Let's cheer Steve on to "The Record".

GO STEVE GO..
