Jo's postings indicate Steve is close to but not quite up to WR pace; last report a couple of days ago was 67 miles adrift, so almost there, then 'just' 208 a day minimum until 7th August 2016.

A long way to go but a steady build up and better than any other competitor at this stage from the respective starts/restart

Shreds  thanks very much for the update which is muchly appreciated.  I have heard tell, read in the papers that a harsh winter cometh!  The Russian Berwick  (would it be George! ??) Swan made its earliest ever arrival in Britain bearing an icy omen for a long cold winter ahead! !

Steve's Strava post indicated that he did the same route today as yesterday. 332.8km. Still edging forwards, but it's a massive task ahead. I reckon he needs to take the same approach throughput the winter, taking no notice of the shorter days if he can, but only reducing his mileage when the weather makes it dangerous/too difficult to carry on.

If this approach does work and he is still close to the pace by early summer, then hopefully he can start a sprint finish over May, June and July.

Given the possibility of a hard winter, I wonder what his fallback option is? He knows he has a standing offer from an expat AUK in the south of France.

His average distance over the last two weeks has been around 210 mpd. If he were to keep that average for the remains of his rebooted challenge, he'd beat the record by about 1400 miles (76,470 miles), which would likely take the record from Kurt too. So a lot will rest on how disruptive this winter will be.

According to my relatives in the Urals, it's been unusually cold with the earliest snow for years. Good reason for the swans to head west! But I don't think it signifies much for the rest of the winter.

I think the Daily Express has consistently forecast the coldest winter every year for the last 10 or so - and it's the same reporter each time - in the hope that one day they'll be right! Long-range forecasting is just not that accurate or reliable, so ignore it.

El Nino was active this year.  I have a recollection that this often results in a colder than typical winter. 

But it would be a brave observer to call it at this early stage. 

It's a possibility though, and I'd imagine Steve is aiming to build up a buffer that means he won't have to break himself getting back up to "par" come April.

It's part of what makes Steve's attempt interesting to me, at the moment.  "What's his contingency"
