Toilet seat for nonstandard hinge hole spacing
« on: 08 January, 2017, 10:05:00 pm »
I bought SO a sand-effect toilet seat which goes very well with her 1980s pampas suite (which ia going to have to stay until funds allow a complete bathroom job),

Unfortunately, this Armitage Shanks chodbin has a seat hole spacing of 165mm.  Most toilet seats, including the one I bought, are adjustable, but only up to 155mm.  They rarely tell you this on the packaging or instructions - I had to google it, having never come across this issue before.

Are there any alternative hinges that allow the extra adjustment?  These are the stainless steel type that aren't fixed to the seat; you slide the hinge pins into the seat and then put it on the pan; once it's in place it can't come off the hinges.  Failing this, who makes a standard round-shaped seat with spacing up to 165mm that will vaguely go with pampas?  Black or wood would do - white would look minging.

A very long time ago, when I was ranting about the lack of an ISO standard for which side of the sink the hot and cold taps should be fitted, it was pointed out to me that even if there were, Armitage Shanks would probably be the new Microsoft.  It's taken a while, but good to hear this is indeed the case.

Apropos of nothing, we had a pampas suit in our first flat. Not really that bad when everything else was white.

More disturbingly, I remember going to visit an old school pal in her new home. The bathroom was palatial.

However, the previous occupants had seen fit to do the whole bathroom: We're talking the entire suite,  plus tiling from floor to ceiling, in SHIT BROWN.

When I saw the thread title and the author, I thought so.
It is simpler than it looks.

I typed it on a netbook with a very small screen...you gits  ;D

It's an accidental portmanteau of "hairy" and "clunge", isn't it?  You filthy-minded individuals.

I've not seen the chocolate brown suite IRL but I have seen dark plum, which was similarly horrid in a hard water area.

I rather liked that misspelling and am sad to see it go...
... especially as partner has had hour of fun with loo seats!

We have also got the wider-than-now-normal fixing spacing problem on our 1970's Ideal Standard loo seat.

Ideal Standard have now exited the retail market apparently.

Pressalit have a great range but only have a few agents in the UK who are all shown as Wholesellers (sic).  The Pressalit website is rather annoying as you can't see the fixing spacing for any of the 91 seats on offer until you drill down to the individual seat.  There is an option to see which seats will fit your loo if you know the maker and the range, but we don't remember the range of course.

Any ideas for a UK based supplier?

IKEA makes a toilet seat that will adapt to any possible hole spacing. Probably not the finest quality, but it does the job!

Found a Croydex one that adjusts up to 200mm.  "Sandstone" which is hopefully similar.  I'll have the other one for my own pampas bathroom, which isn't quite crap enough to replace.

That sounds good - not sure about the colour!  Have you got a website for that please/

Our spacing is about 180mm which is greater than offered by any of the IKEA seats as far as I can tell.

Croydex seat is also an excellent match for pampas - it arrived today.  Unfortunately the knuckle-draggers at Hermes destroyed it in transit, so it will need replacing.  The hinge screws have ripped out of the seat and can't be refitted.  The original one (from The Range) is much better quality tbh...I think I have found some hinges with a greater range of adjustment.  FWIW, my 1989 Twyford crapper also has the wider spacing - about 162mm.  Someone needs to tell The Range that their seats do NOT fit the majority of toilets as claimed - they don't specify the maximum adjustment anywhere on the box or in the fitting instructions.

I think I might modify it by moving the screwed-on hinges outwards 10mm and filling the old screw holes, if visible, with clear silicone.  I could get a refund under the SOGA but it is a perfect match for the pan...
