How wet is 0.3mm of rain?
« on: 14 January, 2017, 10:40:38 pm »
I'm looking at the forecast for tomorrow and it shows 0.2mm to 0.4mm of rain, presumably that's per hour.

How wet is that? I guess it's very light rain, so that  your clothes don't get wet because it evaporates straight away as you're riding into the wind?

Are you sure it's mm not cm? I know this sounds silly but...

London's average daily rainfall is 2-3mm so a tenth of this isn't much but it could represent a hefty short, sharp shower.

That effect will depend on the humidity.

Not wholly off topic, when YR.NO says 2.1mm of rain in the period 9am-12pm, is that 2.1mm in total, or 2.1mm per hour? (I have tried to find the answer on the website but without success.)

I asked exactly the same question - probably about a year ago!

No-one had a definite answer, but my current best guess is that it is a mm-per-hour figure.

(I did also ask the "How wet is ... " question, so it's clearly a common concern ... )

I think that's the average for 9am-12pm.

On https://www.ventusky.com you can set the "precipitation accumulation" to 1 hour or 3 hours.

Eg:

https://www.ventusky.com/?p=51.556;-0.113;9&l=rain-3h&t=20170115/09&w=0AAAAAAAA

for 1 hour it's 0.4mm but 3 hours it's 3mm.

Also the 0.4mm per hour is the average for the hour, at the moment it's not actually raining outside but it says it's 0.4mm-0.3mm here.

It's been raining here for the last 45 min, it's I guess light to medium rain, supposedly 0.2-0.3mm per hour average. It's heavy enough to get wet after riding for few minutes without "waterproofs", after half an hour you'd be soaked, I think.

From google.

Slight rain: Less than 0.5 mm per hour. Moderate rain: Greater than 0.5 mm per hour, but less than 4.0 mm per hour. Heavy rain: Greater than 4 mm per hour, but less than 8 mm per hour. Very heavy rain: Greater than 8 mm per hour.

also this.

Spiders, I expect.  They seem drawn to the innards of rain gauges.
