Belgian Audax rides for 2018
« on: 26 October, 2017, 03:47:03 pm »

Following on from Ivo's Dutch list, below is the Belgian Audax calander from now until late 2018.

Things to note -
* Saturday, zaterdag, samedi
* Tervuren(I run these!), Ternat and Alderlecht are very close to Brussels - dead easy to get to with the Eurostar.
* 23/06 is Brussels - Paris - Brussels. A wonderful 600kms ride.
* 06/09 is BOB, Borders of Belgium. Another little gem, at 1000kms.

I can happily vouch for Tournai, they have a fridge full of wonderful beer at the finish.

Just when I was plotting a wish list of which of the Dutch Audaxes, you make this offering...

Temptation...

J

PS Ok, go on then, who's going to be the first one to offer up a list of Audax rides in Nordrhein-Westfalen or Rhineland-Palatinate...

Forgot to mention, for the 200,300 and 400kms rides, it's just a question of turning up on the day. €5/6/7.
There's a form to fill in and the organisers bring these along.

Is there any further information on the 1200km ride? It is about the right time of tear for me.

I'm guessing it's this one:
https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=34801.msg999377#msg999377 (2011 report)

there are also YACF ride reports from 2013[when I rode it] in there.

And this one by Els in 2014.

Not sure if it has run since 2015?

Borders of Belgium thread:
https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=95531.0

Also Arrivée had an article about the 600k from Ostend that one or two riders on the BoB said had encouraged them to enter the BoB (despite it being written by me).

In general, I have found Belgian audax to be very welcoming. No language problems, friendly riders and the cafes you go to to get the stamp in the card are very understanding of the needs of audaxers. Also, it's easy to get to from south-east England.
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

Hopefully will make the Borders of Belgium ride again. It's looking like there will be a decent showing from the UK lot.

Guy Roefs told me at LEL that next year may be the last time it is run.

Whereas my work schedule means being in Wachtebeke on 6/9 could be problematic.  :(

This is the Belgian Randonneurs website:
https://www.webklik.nl/user_files/2009_12/85505/BRM%202018/Kalender_2018.pdf

The beauty of Belgian BRM's is that you don't have to sign up for ride up to 1000k. You just show up at the start.
The entry fees are: 200k: 5 euro - 300k: 6 euro - 400k: 7 euro - 600k: 8 euro - 1000k: 10 euro.
If there are extra options you have the choice to sign up for those options, but if you don't want to, you don't have to.
Of course that means you get a routesheet at the start with the controls and a brevet card you have to fill out yourself. A GPS track is also available via the website.
Pretty simple.

I'd just like to add something that Rohnny might not realise: cycling an audax in Belgium is like coming home. In the UK cyclists are an oppressed minority. In Belgium everyone is a cyclist, their dad was a racer, their nan cycles to the shops, their neighbour rides audaxes, they are, every one of them, part of the cycling world. They do not pass you in a 20 ton lorry with two inches to spare. They expect to see cyclists. There are cycle paths. When you go into a cafe they will expect to stamp your brevet. They'll ask for your water bottles to fill and ask if you want ice in the bottles. Riding an audax over there isn't like riding an audax in the UK. It's a different world.
And there isn't much of a language problem either. Many people speak English. I could go on. Suffice it to say The Present Mrs Mmmmartin and I looked at moving to Flanders.
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

i must say I'm tempted by the 200km from Ostend in July.

Take the tent and have a long weekend on the Belgian coast with a bike ride thrown in sounds like my kind of fun. I just have to convince the other half that she'd be up to a 200km (probably flattish) ride.

But they can't make decent tea for love nor money.

My experience of cycling in the Ardenne's does not match this. Ascending Signal de Botrange from both sides, I've experienced multiple close passes by a variety of vehicles including HGV's, Buses, cars, etc...

Chocjohn's ride zaterdag   3-3-2018   Tervuren   200 km has been cancelled due to snowy roads and a weather warning. Living only a few km from the turnaround point I can fully agree with this decision.
