Perfect antidote to Eurovision nonse last night in the form of Robyn Hitchcock and His LA Squires at what used to be ULU.  Opening act was Jessica Lee Morgan1.  She can sing a bit.  In fact she can sing a lot.  And she had these percussion gadget strapped to her boots, which looked like the sort of electronic tags The Man fits to ASBO recipients.  Miss von Brandenburg and I approve of her, though not quite enough to buy her records.

Quite a long wait for the main attraction, but worth it.  The LA Squires are a rum-looking bunch but they play guitar/bass/drums like ringing a bell.  It's Mr Hitchcock's first tour with a full band since his collaborations with the Venus 3 a Several of years ago and was a fine trawl through his extensive back catalogue all the way back to the Soft Boys2 days.  Highlight had to be "I Wanna Destroy You", written for Reagan and Thatcher in 1980 and 'dedicated' this time to "Jeremy Hunt and that other guy, whatisname, Trump".  "Stop hectoring us" shouted the token twat in the audience.  I've never seen Uncle Bobby get angry before but he tore the token twat a new one

Half Man Half Biscuit at the O2 Academy in Kentish Town. At least I can say I have been in the same room as Mr Larrington.

When I was buying my DP tracksuit top, I actually preferred the colour of the home one, but to actually buy it; perish the thought! At 58, I am far too old to be moshing. My knee hurts and, boy, was it sweaty at the front. AND I forgot my steel-toecapped trainers.

Martin Carthy on Thursday evening
Airport Convention last night
I was the second youngest in the room on Thursday and not too far off that on Friday
But both gigs were excellent!

Patti Smith in that Cardiff last night.  An excellent evening.
I have to admit to feeling a little trepidation before hand.  I mean, she's 71, this isn't going to be embarrassing, is it?
Not at all.  Her voice is great. Almost unchanged in 40 years, and importantly, she is very relaxed and obviously enjoying herself.
She was accompanied by Tony Shanahan and (of course) Lenny Kaye.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Fairport Convention on Sunday. A pleasant evening and a good chat with Dave Pegg beforehand

David Byrne at New Theatre Oxford.  That's going down as one of the best gigs I've ever been to (it's in the top 2!). A complete experience of sound and vision with an empty stage, no equipment at all.  The 12 piece band (think it was 12) carried their instruments and were constantly moving with much of the movement being highly choreographed.  At least half of them were percussionists, with one bass, a guitar, keyboards and backing vocalists.  Following a start with just Byrne on stage (not sure of the number), the two backing vocalists appeared followed by the entire band for a wonderful version of Lazy which was followed by Izimbra and Slippery People - by this point the audience was no longer seated. What followed was a mix of Talking Heads and solo music that continued the high for another hour and a half. A truly memorable night of music.

That's good, we're off to see Mr Byrne in Berlin in a couple of weeks. :)

Currently stood in the inactive mosh pit at Hull University waiting for Public Image Limited to come on stage. The football appears to be the support act. #NoLightyNoLikey:Football ... Now to be fair, few people like punk for the quality of the music. And few people like punk for the nationalistic sentiment. Hoping Lydon et al  come on soon.

The public image is rotten.

The football was the support act. Oh well.

PiL were full of energy, Shame the same can't be said of the aging audience. I managed to bounce bounce bounce though. Really enjoyed that.

Jack White at the Hammy Odeon.  He's quite a good drummer too.

If anyone invites you to have any interaction with a "rapper" calling himself SHIRT, arrange a prior engagement immediately for he is a Rubbish.

David Byrne at the Tempodrom in Berlin.
Pretty impressive show, apart from the first song everything else was pretty well up tempo and the band didn't get much of a rest from their running about the stage all night. Mr Byrne was keeping up pretty well for an old geezer too.
Recommended.

Roger Waters.   Excellent, though I did baulk at the 90quid.  Once I'd got myself past that hurdle I really enjoyed the show, although because it was mainly PF stuff and not much solo stuff, I was not sure it was worth 2* the Australian Pink Floyd show.

Just listening to Alan Morissette.

I thought she had a really famous album. In an hour and a quarter I’ve not heard any songs I’ve heard before  ???

Amy MacDonald was very good, Nina Nesbitt good value for money and Pixie Lott was taller than one of her backing singers.

Yesterday we had one of the UB40s. I want sure which one, but I think it was the one that “murdered all my songs”.

Excellent afternoon gig (except that it was cold and wet) at the Fishery Wharf Café in Hemel Hempstead, featuring Canadian "Circus Band" Blackberry Wood and the ever-reliable Hat Fitz & Cara Robinson.  And Jess the dog, who barked every time someone applauded.  Fitz wants to take Jess with them to Scandiwegia next week. ;D

Natalie Merchant at St John the Evangelist in Oxford. Last night of her UK tour.

With just Erik Della Penna accompanying her on guitar plus she played piano on a couple of songs at the end. Katell Keineg joined her for Gulf of Araby and Carnival. The set spanned her career from 10,000 Maniacs right through to the Leave Your Sleep project.

Great night, I'd say catch her if you can but it was her last night in the UK before heading to Ireland.
