The Buzzard and Exe-Buzzard 600s 2016
« on: 23 June, 2016, 05:40:50 pm »
I intend to ride the Exe-Buzzard 600 permanent starting from Pangbourne on 9th July, the same day as the Buzzard and Exe-Buzzard calendar events.  My plan is to take a bivvy bag and sleep somewhere around Bath (about 365km from Pangbourne).

Any YACFers in for the calendar events?  I'd like a bit of company (the Buzzard starters should catch me pretty quickly as I'll not start off until well after 07:00 and I'm not the fastest rider you'll encounter).

Also, why does the perm have a lower min speed and therefore extra 2hrs time?

BRM is a fixed time limit, regardless of actual distance. BR allows for overdistance and has a slightly slower nominal minimum speed, in some cases.

So the calendar events are BRM and the perm BR.  Does a BR 600 count towards an SR?

In this case, yes, but most of AUK's calendar events are BR. In other countries, most or all of their calendar events are BRM.

BRs count towards AUK's SR award but not ACP's SR.

I rode the Perm last September and it counted OK for my SR.  IanH kindly let me start in Tadley as an extra control. I stayed at the Leigh Delamere East Services Travelodge, which at ~380km it was a bit far but at least a proper bed :-)  Continuing N the next day via Cirencester to Brackley was jolly hard work but that was probably just me.

Good Luck!!!

Just booked a room in the Exeter TL for the Saturday night. Judging by the price, several of you got there before me.

All the riders should have an email with random details and links to the updated routesheets and gps.  They're here if you need them.

Are there any recommended eateries in Chandlers Ford and Salisbury?

(for Sat morning, that is. Although I guess the Exeter starters will probably benefit from mostly the same outlets.)

I can't recall what was at Chandlers Ford, but there's quite a lot in Salisbury.  Your last chance for a control on the way through is at the station.  There's a small cafe there.

If you're happy with chain coffee shops then there's Costa in CF town centre (directly on route) with plenty of bike space outside and indoor and outdoor seating. Salisbury is barely 90 mins on from CF so it's just a dash into a sweet or cake shop for most, with the next serious food stop Sherborne (Waitrose just off to the left of the main road, dead centre of town).

There is a decent cafe in Sherborne Railway Station.  Poor receipts re. location/time/date, but there's a Sainsbury's ATM ~200m away - https://www.facebook.com/StationCafeSherborne/

Its a massive tourist town - I'm damn sure there is "a lot" there!   :-*

However, I have passed thru several times on perms and never found anywhere very good for audax purposes.

Someone must know - lots of rides go there (including Postie's 300 next week).

Are you, perchance, considering an entry?

Matt originally intended to ride the 600 as a perm from Pangbourne with me.  However, it appears that he's crocked in some way and only trusts himself for 200km, so he intends to accompany me from Pangbourne to Salisbury (about 100km).  We'll start out somewhere between 6:00 and 7:00 on Saturday and pick up initial PoP at the ATM outside the Co-op in Pangbourne centre (it gives time, and place as "Cooperative RG8 7AG Reading").

There's a Wetherspoons pub.
tg, I'm looking for audax hotels anywhere between Wells at 338km and Malmesbury at 403km.  Can you recommend any?  I was thinking Bath at 368km might offer some.

Bath might.  Beyond there you're in lanes (mostly the Fosse Way – there may be ghosts of Roman soldiers) until Malmesbury.

I'm looking forward to this after last weekend's disaster...

At least I know in advance that sleep arrangements are up to me...

Anyway, who is starting from Exeter ??
I’ve decided I’m not old. I’m 25 .....plus shipping and handling.

Think yourself lucky, mikey.  That was just a bike ride.  I'm looking forward to this event as a blessed release from the pain and disaster which is my working week.  Please do not leave pie crusts under the market cross at Malmesbury as I may have to sleep there.

I have my new new bike now ( missed the Mille Pennines :( ) but hope to finish this. I've done half of this ride as a Perm before just after xmas last year (or early this year?) and my GPS went mental and with no useful backup I bailed and got the train back from Bath. This time I will be riding out with very little sleep and taking bivvy kit, testing the new bike and testing a dynamo for the first time, oh and road discs for the first time and road Di2 for the first time and my TCR sleeping kit for the first time, etc... I'll be the one riding fast (for an audax) and then being passed by everyone as I stop to tighten something else up that has fallen off. ;)

It's now confirmed that mattc and I will set off from Pangbourne at 7:00.  If hippy doesn't pass us before he'll no doubt do so as we faff around looking for PoP in Chandler's Ford.  I don't intend to ride fast, as I have an extra 2 hours over the calendar event riders  :D, and I have mattc as a "domestique" until Salisbury ::-) .  Looking forward to a grand couple of days .

Looking like the overnight temperature will be warmer than daytime has been this year to date

Anyone think I'm being absurdly optimistic in opting for only s/s jersey, arm-warmers & gilet?
