Our local castle

OK, if Pingu's posting photos of castles in Denmark, I feel justified in posting a photo or two of Scotty's Castle, which is only a little bit¹ further away.

Fleckenstein, the biggest of our local castles.



This was taken from the top of another castle, one that was inhabited by robber barons in the 12th century:

This one was destroyed by a member of the dominant family in the area, the Lichtenbergs, who lived in this modest hovel:



You can visit them all in a 4-hour ride from here.  Except that you'd need an MTB & Shank's pony to get up Loewenstein.

Just discovered that there are 10 castles or sites thereof the former  in Dundee City.

Castles inside Dundee City limits:
Invergowrie Castle (Dickson Avenue, demolished)
Dundee Law (Iron age hill fort)
Jedburgh Castle (fortified house, Blackness Road)
Dudhope Castle
Dundee Castle (Castle St, demolished)
Mains Castle, Caird Park
Claypotts Castle (Arbroath Road)
Broughty Ferry Castle
Powrie Castle (New)
Powrie Castle (Old)

That must be some sort of record for castle density for a city.

I don't think this is a real castle, but it has battlements, so it can go here.  Just off Olliver Road in Richmond, I suspect it's an old folly.  It's called Oliver's Ducket.

I was out this morning on Two Tree island, with the plan of photographing some birds with my relatively new (to me) 100-400mm lens attached to my Lumix G7. Sadly, the lagoon was frozen and there were no birds within a sensible photographing distance, so I took a few other photos. The above is an unedited photo of Hadleigh Castle, which must have been about 1.2 kilometres away.



For comparison, that's taken at a focal length of 23mm, but not from exactly the same place.

Before we moved to our current house, we rented one of the gatehouses to this remarkably well hidden lat 14th century castle, built very much in the style of Bodiam but seriously mucked about with in Strawberry Hill Gothick style.

This was our rental - some on here will probably know it by sight, it is on the main road north out of Watlington.
