I just managed to pick up a Hilleberg Nallo 2 GT with foot print for a good price after deciding that my Spacepacker is a bit too much like sleeping in a coffin.

yesterday, i became the proud new owner of sweaty betty - a red octane 3 who may have featured in photos around here once or twice before.  i suspect she won't have quite such distant adventures with the cubs and i, but we'll do our best to keep her entertained.

I'm so chuffed we found a fantastically crinkly home for Betty. I look forward to hearing about her new adventures!

Inspired by Mercurykev (and having useless matches on the Yacf Ecosse camping weekend) I bought a firesteel last weekend.
I just want to set things alight now!

Yeahbut, they're awesome fun to play with (as well as surprisingly effective at lighting Trangias).

If you've got a gas cooker at home they are really good at lighting the hob and much more fun than pressing a button.  What you need now is some steel wool, they light that up a treat and you can burn it when it's wet.

Cotton wool balls with a broad-bean sized lump of Vaseline wrapped inside - very good for lighting wood fires with a firesteel :)

Interesting.  Can you use such a device to set fire to meths in a Trangia burner?

^^^ Do you have to set fire to something else (like cotton wool) and then use that to light the meths?

Just strike it directly onto the full burner - but it works better when the meths is warm, I've found.  On a cold morning, a lighter is more effective.

We use a steel for the trangias.   Sometimes it seems to take an age, sometimes it strikes first time.  Temperature and humidity seem to affect lighting efficiency of meths but I've never failed yet.

Is there any firesteel model or brand that is particularly well thought of?

Meths is pretty temperature dependent. To light with a firesteel, it's got to be reasonably warm.
If it's cold it isn't difficult to extinguish a burning match by dunking it in meths.
