Enjoying my coffee this morning I gave silent thanks to YACF for alerting me to Coffee Compass which is where I now get my coffee beans from rather than a supermarket. Better tasting coffee and slightly cheaper to boot!
It got me thinking where else I have gained, some highlights (in no particular order) are:
1. Silk glove liners, superb addition to my cycling wardrobe (thanks for the tip Kim)
2. Philips dynamo front light on special offer at Amazon (Kim again)
3. Escape from my information filter bubble. Lots of interesting and contrasting views put intellectually (most of the time).
4. Queries answered usually with lots of options to peruse and consider.
There are more but these spring to mind.

Assos shorts (because my bum's worth it)
Putting my bottom bracket in the freezer to get the bearings off it.
Loads of useful advice (and people listening to my rants, which kept me just about sane) about crumbly old buildings.
A bit of a laugh about some things you might otherwise cry about.

Above all YACF's a great bunch of knowledgeable, often witty, chums.

My No. 1 benefit from YACF has been getting out and riding with others on forum rides. I had not heard of audax nor CTC club rides before joining the forum, two more lovely opportunities to ride with others.
Other than that, the general knowledge of this broad church covers too much to mention but the level of knowledge is superb.
The yacf massive gets most of the King William College quiz answers every year and that's a pretty wide-ranging selection.
Did we totally miss any answer this year?

Alot of the time, this place, reminds me how good and nice people are.

Firstly, learning of the various difficulties people suffer, I realise how fortunate I have been in life - so far at least!
Secondly, whatever problem you have, there is usually at least one expert on here who can help.
Thirdly, an infinite amount of cycling knowledge and experience.

Another +1 for the cat thread....from someone who was up at 6am this morning cleaning up moggy vomit.
Also I like the general lack of trolls here abouts and those that do stick their heads up, quickly get taken down in a very polite way :thumbsup:

Advice, but particularly DIY advice
I still remember when I was decorating and found these big gaps around the windowframes and I had no idea what to do about it. Got advice on here and the the whole thing took a few hours to sort out.

+1 for the emotional support, complete with lack of judgemental overtones.
I came for the cycling info, I stayed because I feel welcome and although I haven’t yet met any of you IRL I think of many of you as friends. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll get my bike out again.

Are we allowed to include YACF's predecessors? If it hadn't been for finding a cycling forum sponsored by a magazine, a scarily large number of years ago, I doubt that I would have ever taken up cycling regularly again, which helped in the weight loss programme the following year (and four of the five stone lost then are still missing), and I would not be anything like as fit as I am now.
Since then it's been a mixture of help (cycling and otherwise) and general enjoyment. Pretty well the first site I check in the morning and the last in the evening.

Ah yes, I started as a C+ forum person too. ISTR that a number of people got kicked off by hardline moderators and then it turned into BikeRadar, which is just silly.

yacf is still a daily habit of mine.
It has informed so many area of my life; politically, cycling, books, DIY.
It provides great escapism in the Ride Reports board.
So much more.
Where would we be without it ?

It is rare that information or advice on YACF is called out as being Wrong (meaning, it is wrong).
For this to happen in a small forum with a small number of members is rather wonderful. And very valuable.

Most folk here know to STFU if they have no Clue.
This is a relief and a blessing.
For myself, I state if I am uncertain about an answer I give and follow up with a fact check.
Many here do similar.

I confess to frequenting other cycling fora.
I'm sure that it is my loss of pride, dignity and general self-respect that has led to this.
But this is the only forum that I would consider as home.

Yeah, ditto - my browser is permanently set to the YACF tab.
Nuther thing I like here is the absence of that "family forum" humbug, which primly censures any word not found in the 1955 Oxford School Dictionary.

The lack of significant trolling. Whether this is a consequence of draconian moderation before I joined of because any troll is quietly corrected and then fed no further (I suspect the later), it is highly unusual on the interwebs and somethin to be applauded.

Absolutely. The closest we tend to get is tongue-in-cheek recommendations of inappropriate technical solutions, and the usual holy wars over the likes of tubeless tyres, disc brakes or electronic shifting (which get a bit circular, but tend to be reasonable discussions).
Sometimes the politics threads get heated, but rarely to the point of personal attacks.
The extremely low incidence of spam is also notable.

My nephew recently joined the forum.
He bemoaned the number of times his application had to undergo an approval / confirmation process - something I was unaware of as I had an indefinite visa from the other place. I assume that that is representative of the troll / bot filter.
Oh, and while I'm here, has someone had a word with Tigerrrr recently?
I used to enjoy his dispensing of alternative medicinal procedures.
They appear to be a bit thin on the ground of late.

If I have any kind of problem, I ask the forum. If my laptop is on, the forum is on a tab. I am proud to know some amazing people through the forum and it's predecessors. The general lack of nastiness is notable as is the fantastic helpfulness of forumites. It is the place that feels like home, even when I am barely cycling.

Quite apart from the erudite smut, and the smutty erudition, there are real live experts on here about a massive range of subjects - people who tell you amazing things in a way that never seems to be "talking down". I have some very good friends as a result of joining YACF and its predecessor, many of whom are about the same age as my kids. That is something I cherish.
I think we should organise some more forum rides.

I learned to drive in the area and never suffered glycogen depletion climbing near the then Round Oak Steel Works. I suppose there are advantages to the internal combustion engine...

I have some very good friends as a result of joining YACF and its predecessor, many of whom are about the same age as my kids. That is something I cherish.

One day, we'll all be too old. I'll be 50 this year ffs!

That's reminded me - it's 40 years since first heard of AUK and joined up - double SR and PBP in '79. That'd take me a couple of years now!

Among other things, threads like the Sandy Denny one. The postings are reminders of what had been forgotten and/or disregarded, and pointers to the unknown.
