Basil, who wasn't wearing a personal flotation device...
« on: 08 January, 2019, 03:18:29 pm »
Road.cc is reporting a "wearable air bag" for cyclists. My initial reaction was on the lines of "OMFG" followed by disappointment that the inflation wasn't more dramatic (I've seen a Hovding inflatable helmet thing accidentally triggered), but then I noticed a comment that it could be useful "if you crash into a body of water." So...  ;)

Like most cycling safety devices, this fails to protect the left elbow in a crash (103.7% of cycling injuries involve the left elbow, after all).  Looks like just the thing for taking the canal route home from the Country Girl, though.

Doesn't this do the rounds every few years? Then the wind goes out of it...

Looking at the video, he needs protection from the tailgating scaffold lorry behind him.

Indeed. And I have a 52 year old scar to prove it. :)

Weird, this assertion of Kim's.  I also have a left elbow (recumbent) scar, but only about 4 years old.....

ED:  Ah, but, thinking about it, if we rode on the wrong side of the road, would it be a right elbow phenomenon?

I have one of the left as well but that was from off road riding - but I'm obviously conditioned to ride on the left

I believe it is a ‘statistic’.

But anecdotal data is supporting it.  :demon:

My left elbow has pins in it from a cycling accident though that was because of a broken right toe clip, a pothole and a resulting right foot - spoke - forks interaction.

Both my elbows have the texture of sandpaper after departing from bikes at odd angles.

I've got one of those.  It helps conceal the various left elbow (MTB) scars that were there before it.

I think so.  Although my right elbow isn't entirely unscathed.

I don't think either of my elbows has ever been injured when cycling.

I've had grazed palms and knees, as well as what I think was a bleed into my left trochanteric bursa...

I made a spectacular mess of my left hand in a crash; much ripping of skin, and lots of blood. Fortunately, no broken bones. Being left handed meant that I was off work for a couple of weeks.
Many years later I dislocated my left shoulder. That was the square root of no fun.

I suppose that my left elbow is the median joint...

I'll get my coat.

Ah. Me.
Sorry, I recently confused a reference to a Torquay hotel owner to myself.  I decided not to assume in future.
Anyway.  No canals around here, mate.  And the Teifi doesn't have a riverside path.

And the Teifi doesn't have a riverside path.

Is that because the path is now extra river?

Yes, it’s on rotation with indicators.

Yes, it’s on rotation with indicators.

Indicators are more useful!

(Actually, I should do a review-by-proxy...)

The obvious next step is for indicators incorporated into an airbag-vest.  :hand:
