I was up at stupid o'clock this morning, shooting the Smithfield Market Christmas Eve meat auction.  By kind permission of market trader and Smithfield legend Mr Greg Lawrence, I was allowed backstage into the premises he and his team use to hold the Smithfield Christmas meat auction.  A traditional event that has been held every year for hundreds of years, the auction is where market traders sell off surplus stock ahead of the Christmas break, direct to members of the public, often at a very substantial discount.

This year was busier than ever; a crowd of two or three hundred turned up, with many waiting several hours for a good place.  It's absolute mayhem, but Greg always makes sure that everyone goes away with something for their Christmas dinner.

Short of shooting in a war zone, operating theatre or maybe at a bare-knuckle fight, I don't think I could have managed to get my camera gear more covered in blood and gore if I'd have tried.  I ended up taking a Manfrotto light stand into the shower to wash the blood off it.  My camera, lens, strobes and triggers got a good swab down with isopropyl alcohol to get the goop off them.

Here's some of my favourite ones, rendered in B&W:

Not really somewhere you'd expect to find a vegetarian, I do have to admit:

After hearing tales of last year's meatfest, I went and asked nicely beforehand.  I'm beginning to realise that anyone can just turn up and point a camera at things; the real work in this sort of photography is in doing the legwork first, getting to know people and gaining their trust.  I'm hoping to do some more formal portraiture with some of the characters at the market and this ought to be a good first step...

That's where I'm rubbish.  Too shy to ask, and I keep kicking myself for it.  You've done a great job.

I'm spectacularly failing with the YACF 12 days of Christmas thing, but I *was* out with my camera yesterday.  And a bunch of speedlights.  And an assistant (get me  ::-))

I was shooting street portraits up at Borough Market and this is the sort of thing I was doing:

I've written a blog post about it on my spanky new website.

You know what it's like when you think you're riding really well, and then Michael Hutchinson, or the Sky team out training, comes past?

I've just looked at Charlotte's photos :-\ ;D

It's back to a Box Brownie for me.

Great photos, both.  Inspiring splashes of colour on a grey day that's been getting to me.  Cheery.  Thank you.

I have been out along the railway that I hope to turn into a cycle path. Despite the drainage, I managed to traverse all but 20m ( which necessitated climbing a 50ft cutting wall, 100m walk and then descend the cutting again) and finally got detailed notes of the drainage that is there and it's condition. I was very pleased to discover that much of the original 150 year old cast iron pipes are still intact, though becoming clogged. They are 30" id and laid in 6ft sections (or thereabouts.) Next time I will take a shovel.

But it looks good. There is nothing that requires much more than a man with a digger  and a chainsaw to fix the drainage.

This was the bit I had to bypass..

This is a section of pipe that has broken in (This is early castings - pre Bouch so QC wasn't the best, especially as it was not structural) and it appears to have got quite clogged. The water depth is about 8 inches and it is a 30" pipe (the wall thickness is 1") There isn't the flow to justify it being that full so there must be a blockage somewhere.

With the drainage sorted (mostly by removing the trees that have clogged the culverts), this kind of flooding should be a thing of the past.

This is the kind of 'tree blocking a culvert' incident. Unless you know what to look for you wouldn't even see the culvert as s o much soil has washed in and with virtually no flow it has not cleared. (And a bridge for good measure.)

Yesterday, on a walk with Miss Dan the Elder...

Stitched together from multiple images, although I've not quite got the isolation of the fence how I want. There was another, but it had a hole in the set of pictures. I'll have to go back!

Things to remember include:

Wind on the film before cocking the shutter

Weston use different film speeds

It may be a German camera, but it's measured in feet

ETA: Don't take anyone's word for it that they've sent you a 100ASA film.  Look at it, because if you discover when you take it out that it is a Provia 400X (E6, so not much latitude), you will be as pissed off and embarrassed as I currently am. :(

Not quite today...

I'm fairly proud of this one, taken on my phone (must buy another camera after I have bought new boots and a new suit  )

The major annoyance for me is that I needed a bit of 'right hand down' or to be a little closer to the wall as the photo has a really strong focal point, which is off centre which I think makes it a little difficult to look at.

New teaching toy. Students put up the green flag when they have completed the exercise or the red flag for assistance. (Yes I know I should be more colourblind sympathetic..)

Am doing my first proper wedding today, got lucky with very attractive couple and great venue, not so much with the weather...  Am currently siting in the bar having a sandwich and cuppa while they all eat lunch, then it's speeches / cake / first dance and I'm offski.

Quite stressful but am loving it - and got another booking for a wedding in Barcelona for the chauffeur and his partner in the spring 😄(if they like these photos...)

Will post pics when i can, but I'm v pleased with the quick scan on the LCD. Fingers crossed.

It's nice to still be there when the light changes, especially when you've changed the landscape a bit in the meantime.

We have our suspicions about the top of that spire. The scaffolding has been up for some time. The top did disappear (was truncated) and has now reappeard (in a very clean sandstone colour). We suspect it may be fibreglass and a well disguised mobile phone mount.
