Title: Ear Worms

How do I get Bonnie Tyler's 'Total eclipse of the heart' out of my brain (http://www.hotstocked.com/articles-img/small/Edward-Munch-The-Scream-8903.jpg)

Earworms are highly infectious organisms. You are spreading a disease!
I'd not thought of that song for a decade and now it's going round many yacf heads.

Now I'm only falling apart.
Nothing I can do...

I used to work with her uncle. He was very proud of her.

I'm lucky being immune to ear worms because I never notice the words to songs.

Except Dylan's.

I can heartily recommend Spotify (http://www.spotify.com/en/), I've been listening to songs that I haven't heard in ages, and the adverts aren't too intrusive.

Currently listening to Iron Maiden. I'd never pay for it, but at least I know they'll get their royalties for me listening to it.

For the entire first night of PBP, I had the first verse of Half Man Half Biscuit's "Our Tune" on permanent repeat:

You said you’d found me helpless on the A47
Shouting at the passers-by that Alan Brazil
Seems to be the singer in the Goombay Dance Band
And now you want to put me in the ambulance
But I don’t want to go in the ambulance

Now that's irony  ???

Merry merry king of the bush is he
Laugh Kookaburra, laugh Kookaburra
Gay your life must be

Oh crikey, I really suffer from this, don't I? :-\

This morning, I was struck by how lucky I was with a tailwind and th changes of the traffic lights favouring my progress in most cases, so Kylie started off with 'I Should Be So Lucky'.  In contrast to fboab's earworm, the fact that I know very few of the words made this particularly unpleasant.  Fortunately, that morphed into 'Dreaming' by Blondie, which was better.

Then I hit the traffic, and a recurrent song reappeared: Little Boxes by Pete Seeger.  It's actually about urban sprawl, but it applies to the heap of cars on the road too.

Quote
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky...there's a red one and a green one and a blue one and a yellow one.  And they're all made out of ticky-tacky and they all look just the same

Earworm lyrics help needed!

It's driving me crazy.

ISIRTA Bill Oddie song (as performed by John Cleese with the company):

'I've got a ferret sticking up my nose...
How it got there I can't tell
But now it's there it hurts like hell
And what is more it radically affects my sense of smell...'

OK with that so far, but there's another verse that goes summat like;

'I've got a ferret sticking up my nose...
How it got there I can't say
It wasn't there the other day...'

And that's where i get stuck, and it goes round & round in circles in my head.  And I know Butterfly knows the words... :-\

Just for you, transcribed from You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS_fCLKamfo).  You have the first verse right.

I've got a ferret sticking up my nose.
It pokes its head out every time he blows
I can stand it for a while
Although it's absolutely vile
It's not as bad as last week when I had a crocodile

I can see a bare-bottomed mandrill
Slyly eyeing his other nostril.
I really don't know what to do
But if it jumps inside there too
I shall be the proud possessor of a kind of nasal Zoo

I've got a ferret sticking up my nose
It starts singing when he wears his formal clothes
I can almost stand the noise
But at parties it destroys
My hard-earned and carefully cultivated social poise

I've got a ferret sticking up my nose
Worst of all it constantly explodes
Ferrets don't explode you'll say
But it happened nine times yesterday
And I should know for each time I was standing in the way

I've got a ferret sticking up my nose
He's got a ferret sticking up his nose
How it got there I can't tell
But now it's there it hurts like hell
And what is more it radically affects
My sense of smell!

I'm not sure M. le Maire's old friend Mr Shovel would be happy to be relegated to such a mundane task.  You don't want chips on the shoulder of your shovel...

Is it cycle heresy or just pure redneck to say that I often have the theme tune to 'Smokey and the Bandit' stuck in my head on long rides?

Redneck update:  I mostly got round the inaugral Etape Caledonia with the song "I Really Like Girls" by George Thorogood and the Destroyers stuck in my head.  I still haven't beaten that time.

I also sometimes sing "The Ace of Spades" on descents.  I find it strangely calming (along with much of the second Fields of the Nephilim album.  I get that in my head and I don't mind crashing out and dying so much I reckon).

Next Marmotte I'm going to film the Galibier descent with me 'singing' Motorhead songs.

Mmm.  That's quite invasive, isn't it?  Haunting.

By contrast, this morning, I had Buzzcocks.  Mainly 'What Do I Get?'  But also 'Ever Fallen In Love...' (which is, at least, my favourite).  My fault, really, because I'd been listening to them on Youtube last night, but I also listened to War of the Worlds, Squeeze, Blondie, Skids, Undertones, Magazine...

Is the term "earworm" a recent arrival?

I was chatting to a German girl earlier this year and she used the term.  I was puzzled, and she explained it.  I assumed it was a literal translation of a German idiom.  But then I started noticing it in use.   So ... has the term been around for ages and I just managed to ignore it.  Or did my German friend infect the national consciousness with it when she visited?

On a side note: our local radio station plays that song at least three-five times a week, where before I only heard it when I put it on.

Woke up to the most bizarre ear worm today.

The inspiration came at a meeting at work a couple of weeks ago when my boss was talking about someone he knew in Chicago.  The rogue in me decided to quip that "I used to work in Chicago.... I don't work there any more"

Twas amusing to see who clocked it and who didn't.

Move to this morning where I was clearly amusedly thinking about this as I woke up and now I find myself all morning singing it to myself (silently!) and - making up new verses!  Oddly, I find I am far more inspired than when the pressure was on during an actual renditions in post-rugby piss ups when I was a student.  :-D

A couple of days ago, at work, we were discussing Oil Well Image Logs, where instruments lowered into the borehole record photo-realistic images of the borehole wall.
We were comparing these with core photos, which are photographic images of retrieved core samples.

One difference is that the Image Logs are from the inside, looking out.
The core photos are from the outside, looking in.

Ever since that discussion, I've had Pink Floyd's "Wot's... Uh the Deal?" from 'Obscured by Clouds' going around in my head.
For about 2 days now.

It's one of Big Clive[1]'s creations, notable for not involving anything actually exploding or catching fire.  As well as functioning as a public safety announcement, it also answers the important question of what Kraftwerk would sound like if they were Glaswegian.

While driving in Scotland the music player played a track at random. I got tonnes of tracks on random best off and mixes, that I often never listen too and/or remember I got. This track tickled my grey cells and today I found the track that I have spent a good 20 years to find. Now and again a bit of the song popped up as an earworm and I knew nothing about other than the word Scot. Back in the mid 80's I remember we were on a school trip and we sang that a bit from it as we went to the candy store, as it gave a good echo in the valley.

I just found it and it is not anything near what I remember, I was sure it was a bit like Status Quo/ELO. But it is Italian disco/pop instead - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oorzwn4E5xc

It is just the first bit (the lalala bit) that used to go around my head for a day or two to only then bugger off and I couldn't recall again.

The entire discography in Peli's family's ears for the last 3 weeks. It started months ago but peaked about two weeks before Run Rig's last concert, The Final Mile. That the whole lot went to in Stirling last week, I think they enjoyed it as they are still singing/humming their tunes. It has been so bad that I got the tunes as ear worms too now, heck I can sing along to the Celtic hits too ...

I had heard some of their tunes in DK but I didn't know their name until I meet Peli, then learned how massive they were in DK. I saw them in in Manchester about 2'ish years ago, which I enjoyed. But when the option was laid in front of me - put the mutt in a kennel/house sitter and see the band OR go camping with said mutt while others went and sang - I did pick the latter :)

Blighty wants his country back
Fifty-inch screen in his cul-de-sac
Wombic charm of the Union Jack
As he cries at the price of a bacon bap

Islam didn’t eat your hamster
Change isn’t a crime
So won't you take my hand sir
And sing with me in time

G R E A T
G R E A T

Blighty wants her blue passport
Not quite sure what the union’s for
Burning bridges and closing doors
Not sure what she sees on the seashore

Islam didn’t eat your hamster
Change isn’t a crime
So won't you take my hand sister
And sing with me in time

G R E A T
G R E A T

You can have it all, I don’t mind
Just get ready to work overtime

‘Cause we’re all in this together

This is getting a lot of airplay on 6music at the moment, and it is quite likely the most insanely catchy/irritating song you will hear all year - has a touch of the Flying Lizards about it:

Chaise Longue by Wet Leg
https://youtu.be/Zd9jeJk2UHQ

Won't be everyone's cup of tea but I love it - has some great lines, eg "Would you like us to assign someone to butter your muffin?"

And the video is fantastic too.
