Rhayder to Builth Wells

Does anyone have a good route between Rhayder and Builth Wells? I want to avoid the A470 as much as possible but NCN8 is a bit too offroad for my bike and I don't want to pile on too many miles. My plan so far is to go A470 Rhayder to Newbridge on Wye, then join either the old A470 to Builth Wells or switch to NCN8 (which is on roads from this point).

Rhayader > NCN8 or B4518 to Dolfallen > NCN8 to Llanwrthwl > A470 to Newbridge > NCN8 to Builth. All tarmac, all lovely (except the A470)

Was looking at this the other day. Ended up doing the A470 to Newbridge with my boy as I know the state of the byway after Llanwrthwl. We just got it over and done with rather than back track from Rhayader. However I have spotted this crossing of the Elan for future investigation, be a Guinea Pig if you like. About 450m of farm track bridleway with a ford or footbridge which ever takes your preference. Avoids too much back tracking if you've come out of the Elan Valley for cake at The Old Swan Tearooms.

That brings back memories. 😀.

The bridge should be fine, but the ford is best considered to be for play only:
