I counted 14 squished frog carcasses in a stretch of about 250 metres this morning...  :'(

I'm going to contact the Council and see if they can put up some "Frogs/Toads Crossing" warning signs.

I think there's always a problem where a road runs near/parallel to a breeding waterway. Amphibians mostly live on the land till they return to spawn in the water in spring. I recall many squished frogs on the B1000 in Hertfordshire near the River Mimram

Yesterday the snow melted. We went for a walk to the forest and Mrs C heard a skylark. Yeay!  :)

Irises in our garden.

I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I had a bumblebee visitor today.  First of the year (that I've seen) for our garden.

Not many flowers out for him yet.

I'm going to put a bumblebee hotel into the new garden.

Curlews    I think they are great.

I heard a curlew on the Tees/Wear border this evening.  Marvellous birds.

I also saw my first lapwing of the year at the weekend
But, but, but... ???
Curlews and Lapwings is winter birds.  (at least round here  ;D)

We know it's spring when they all leave.

Heard the first chiff-chaff of the year today, though.

I'm satisfied that it is now spring.

There's still a bit of a shortage of daffodils but I was wearing shorts on the bike today and it didn't seem like a bad idea.

And I went up a hill in the big ring.

Ah, the joys of living by the sea :)

I live in Darlington, which is valley land between the moors and the sea: lapwings and curlews moving up the Tees valley means they're heading to their nesting sites, for spring.

Blue Tits nest in my roof. Every year they tap away like woodpeckers making the hole bigger.

which is unnecessary as they can get in and out perfectly well.

I emailed the Council about the squashed frogs on my commute.  They're going to put up some more prominent "frogs/toads/newts crossing" signs, plus they've put me in contact with the local people who are doing a 'FrogWatch'.

Yesterday we were digging my friend's car out of the mud he'd got stuck in, when his son said "What's that up there?" It was a white stork flying directly overhead. First of the year. And it did bring good luck - we got his car out.  :)

It's warm here. No gloves or jacket on tonight's ride home at about 8 p.m. A jumper was enough.

Arriving at work this morning, I glanced round the car park (partly looking for dead rats - see post from last week) and saw that every clump of daffodils was in flower.  It was just beautiful.  As the smile spread across my face, the woodpecker hammered, and I grinned like a loon.
