getting the climbing profile off a Vista HcX

as the manual is useless; can anybody tell me how to get the altitude profile off a particular ride onto a pc (if I didn't reset it before but know when I started the ride) and convert it easily into a total climb figure?

I did it by saving it as a GPX file and then using GPS-Altitude-Chart (freeware) to plot the profile:

You can edit a gpx file in wordpad to delete sections you aren't interested in. Work on a copy in case you delete too much.

the gpx will show the elevation at each point but how can I get it to just count the total climbing?

eg (where the first value is the altitude; the second is the distance)

1      29 m         76 m         250° true   N50 56.192 W0 23.859
2      28 m         32 m         276° true   N50 56.177 W0 23.920
3      27 m         228 m         283° true   N50 56.179 W0 23.947
4      25 m         178 m         300° true   N50 56.206 W0 24.137
5      25 m         161 m         312° true   N50 56.254 W0 24.270
6      26 m         98 m         317° true   N50 56.311 W0 24.373

Stick the GPS file into eg GPS-Altitude-Chart (other freeware is available) and it'll give you the total climb/descent.  That plot I showed upthread has the total calculated climb shown (3568 m in that case)

Of course the figure you get has to be interpreted rather than taken at face value.
when you're dead you're done, so let the good times roll
