I think it's banjaxed, so asking for confirmation:

My monitor (at least 4 years old), LCD, has suddenly developed a thin, bright, vertical line from top to bottom, about 3/4 of the way along.  Turning the power off and on did nothing. I suspect I'll have to shell out for a new one.  Yes? No?

long shot, but try rubbing it with the eraser end of a pencil. if the pixels are just stuck, it might just prod it back into life.

My rather nice HP monitor failed recently. It evidenced that all was not well, via artifacts all over the screen. YMMV.

Try reducing the resolution, see if that fixes it.

A single line ( either horizontal or vertical ) turning into a bright line indicates that a row or column driver transistor  ( probably contained, along with thousands of others, within a Surface-Mount Device  (SMD) chip ) has pooped itself short-circuit.

Unless you want to monkey around with replacing SMD chips on the panel driver PCB, it's pooped.

He could try replacing the transistor?

Kim will know how.
It is simpler than it looks.

Aye, maybee.
Gonna need a scary sharp knife to get into the IC housing.
And some L33t soldering skilz.

Doing an SMD chip replacement seems an order of magnitude easier, but not easy either...

By monkeying around with replacing SMD chips on the driver PCB, of course.
