Swollen leg
« on: 22 July, 2018, 01:27:23 pm »
My left one to be precise.

The lowest bit of it has been rather swollen for quite a few years but hasn't hurt. Two weeks ago it swelled up much more than usual so I arranged a doc appointment. That led to a blood test and me sleeping with my leg more elevated than usual. I have noticed a rather sore varicose vein near my ankle.

Within the past two or three days I have noticed a different-from-normal swelling just below my calf muscle. Last night, after a shower, I realised it had swollen some more to the extent that I was inclined to dial 111 for advice. This is in conjunction with the family history of left legs: my brother has twice had DVTs in his, and my sister has had thrombophlebitis in hers (I am impressed that "thrombophlebitis" is a Known Word in two different spell checkers that I have used).

My 111 call resulted in a 4.45 am appointment today in the GP unit in Southend Hospital. The doctor I saw said she thought it wasn't DVT but was cellulitis. It is a bit painful. I have a course of antibiotics  - fluoxocillin, 28*500mg capsules to consume over 7 days.

TBF the 1000mg of fuckloxacillin [sic] 4x a day gave me acid during the 1 hour I couldn't eat before and then hour I couldn't eat after each dose.  I am less bad on 500mg tho, so hope it's manageable.

IMOHO 500mg Fluclox is not a big dose for a sizeable WB.
I can't remember this upset my tummy very much.

Wot Helly says. I increasingly see 500mg as homeopathic. I would also ice for 20mins every hour.
By elevate, I mean that your foot should be above heart level otherwise it is again homeopathic.

Quite an inconvenient time to get this as I have spent the past week in St. Andrews on a choral summer school. That meant I was standing up a lot. On Friday, after mot much happening despite the antibiotics, it got worse. There were two GPS and a consultant plastic surgeon on the course and advice was to get it seen. One of the GPs came with me to the minor injures unit in St. Andrews and my score for having a dvt was negative. The conclusion was that it was muscular - the injury is quite close to where I had a major tear 4 years ago.

It is feeling quite a lot better now.

Phew.  Was worried that it was serious enough that you'd had to take up golf!

Curiously enough, there is a big event on. The Senior Open. Some of the players must be very good because I have heard of them. There is one chap called Langer and another called Montgomerie. I was walking along a road beside the course this afternoon and I stopped to see what happened in golf.

There is absolutely no warning when something is about to happen. In cricket it’s easy because you only need to watch for a few seconds when the bowler starts his run up until a fielder retrieves the ball and you can go back to your conversation or sudoku or whatever, and in football and rugby the crown noise tells you that something is going on, but in golf there isn’t anything. Several times this afternoon people near me started clapping but I didn’t see anything happen at all.

So did it clear up?
I have it from time to time, bloody horrible, then they draw all over you leg with a magic marker which lasts longer than the swelling and redness, leaving you with what looks like a badly drawn tattoo.
