Sod the caption, I want to know what the real story is behind that!

I'm going to guess it's one of the early attempts at detecting enemy aircraft before they invented radar.  Listening for engine noise was the best method they had.

Kim more or less has it. They are WW1 Russians, and the binoculars are focused at infinity "so that when you found the source of the sound by turning your head, you could see the aircraft creating that sound."

Sure about that? The caps look all wrong. As well as the shape, the only caps I've seen with two little round badges one above the other like that were German.
