I may clash with my proposed Camino but I'll see if I can work round it.

Great fun... you get to meet up with all the weirdos who post on here.

And bookings are now open

I've booked a pitch. And a van.

Ain't that the truth, I saw some of the stalwarts back in mumbly whenever and I was scared (or is that scarred?) ;D
-
I am going to need to book a car pitch for this as a small tent and cycle camping is now out of the question. With my PMR and aftereffects of covid I have difficulty in getting up and down from the ground and getting into a low tent.
Do we still mark YACF on the car camping booking?
-
Yes Alan, they normally try and site you close to the others.
-
Thanks. I will get my booking done later today.
-
Never been. What’s it like?
I too would like to know this.
*Nikki from Big Brother voice*
What is it?
-
It's like a YACF camping weekend, but much bigger and with a few stands and organised rides and things.
If you're expecting a massive trade show with bargains to be had, you'll be disappointed.
If you're expecting a social event with like-minded people, it's great.
-
Mainly a social event nowadays, also includes:
- saddlebag sale with a mixture of useful / obscure components, clothing, books etc
- auction, always interesting to see the auctioneer trying to get money out of a bunch of cyclists
- trade stands
- displays from some non-standard suppliers, groups and clubs usually including veteran cycle club, BHPC, ICE trikes
- grass track racing and possibly some cyclo cross if the local club can be persuaded to take part
- catering and a bar (if it's the same as last year, some very tasty locally brewed beer)
- quiz
- music
- organised bike rides
More info on the website at yorkrally.org

Cheers mate. I had a look at the site and it was like pulling teeth trying to find info. Are you heading down this year? Thinking about having a ride down.
-
I'm planning to repeat this years adventure. I will book in the next few days 😊
-
I will be taken the bongo down , if you want to cadge a lift D.A.L.E . Or I can take a tent & provisions down for you .
I also have a spare trike for you, gan on ;D you know you want to .

One of my favourite memories is still the night ride organised by Crinkly
a few some years back. The reactions of somewhat inebriated late night party goers trying to insert their latch keys, to a brightly lit peleton zooming past will never fade.

Dale - I'm one of the 'new' volunteers, so I'll be there helping with setup etc from Wednesday. It is a nice ride down, let me know if you'd like a gpx of my route from previous years.

Gulp 2011!
-
Yes indeed. It brings it home to you that, firstly, we are getting old, and secondly, for well over 20% of my life, this forum, and its immediate predecessor, have provided a large chunk of my socialising and sheer good fun in that time.
-
Hmmm, if I'm not out of the country then, I'd be keen to cycle down to it from Edinburgh camping on the way.
-
Not sure about this. 2022 was my first attendance and based on that, it's a great excuse for a ten-day or so tour and a good occasion to meet people. But the show itself is nothing much and judged as a campsite, it's a bit crap. But then it is, what, £6 a night? So on that basis, could use it as cheap occasion to have a look round York (again).
-
And you will be missed if you don't go :)
-
BFC and I are going with the campervan - all booked in.
Pondering doing a 200 while we are up there, most likely on the Saturday because opening hours. But wondering if there are any planned or historic and reusable (like a perm) audaxes from the rally?
-
What's the odds I can just rock up, pay my money and pitch a tent? Or at least book a camping spot a couple of nights before? Not sure if I can make it but would like to.

My ladies 200 goes from York.

Nice Abbeys to look at, I stopped in Ripon and Sheriff Hutton for food & toilets.

Pretty good, I'd imagine, though you'll no doubt get allocated a pitch a fair way from anything.
-
That's my plan at present as I am still unsure about being able to fund this trip. Of course if I can I will be attending.
-
Just booked.

:D
Ha, I'm like 97% certain I'm coming down for at least the Saturday/Sunday. The trike idea still terrifies me.
-
Don't think i will make it this year unfortunately.
-
I'll be there on the Saturday at least, mevves staying over.
-
Group ride to Naburn Saturday evening anyone?
-
Oh may be possible after all, following consultations. Group ride would be really nice. T'as been a while.
Edit.
Booked.
-
 I seem to recall a nice pubbe at Naburn....
-
I am still hoping to come money permitting :)
-
For the first time in years, York Pride isn't on at the same time!
M'off to a gig on the Friday, but will be around the rest of the weekend with the usual offer of 'charging sockets', sofas, baths and laundry facilities etc for anyonne that needs 'em :)
-
Group ride to Naburn Saturday evening anyone?
I'm not Rally-ing but I might come down for this.
-
Group ride to Naburn Saturday evening anyone?
sounds good Deano . I might bring the tadpole trike , even a big jessie like D.A.L.E could manage that . :)
-
Group ride to Naburn Saturday evening anyone?
It'd be rude not to, given it's my side of York...
-
Assuming that I get there I'm up for a Potter to nayburn :)
-
Group ride to Naburn Saturday evening anyone?
That's almost compulsory.
-
Campsite booked, I'll be riding down from probably Middlesborough on the Friday and back on probably the Sunday.
-
Bloody hell. Am I going to have to actually ride m'bike? :o
-
Yes 😉
-
With caik of course.
-
I have booked :). I just need to find my sleeping mat which seems to have disappeared since last year ::-)
-
I’ve been planning on attending the rally for a while now, although I’ve only just got around to booking a pitch.
It’ll be great to see you all.
-
I have booked :). I just need to find my sleeping mat which seems to have disappeared since last year ::-)
Did it fall of on your way home?
-
I thought that l had packed it when I went to Etherley farm but didn't have it. It's got too be here somewhere ::-)
-
As some of you already know because of various niggly medical conditions and age (80 this week) I cannot any longer cycle camp so the car was my only option for getting to York. For that reason, only a couple of weeks ago I got a 4-man car camping tent from Blacks. I have just put it up in the garden and it is much bigger and heavier than I anticipated and with my knackered hands I found it difficult to pack it away properly.
So here is my offering: I shall come to York and most likely stay over until Monday morning. If any of you want said tent you will have to help me pack it away and take it with you. Or help me pack it away and get it in my car for you to collect from me at my home. Don’t want anything for it and there may be some other items of camping gear if of use to anyone.
Let me know if interested.

-
Sad news but a generous offer. (No, I don't want it.)
-
I'm certain that some of us will at the very least be able to assist with the un-pitching and packing up, regardless of the tent's eventual destination!
-
I just mentioned this to the EldestCub who expressed a cautious interest in this very generous offer - I think he needs to ascertain work schedules before he would be able to commit to heading to the racecourse at a time to suit you!
-
I'm planning on coming over Saturday - Monday, although I am a little disappointed that multi-tasking with pride is not possible. :D

SATURDAY RIDES
09:30 The Non-Conventionals
Ian Prince (York Rally Committee) is leading this ride for those who ride tricycles, recumbents, hand cycles, Moultons, Bromptons etc mainly along a traffic-free cycle path to the Tearoom at Naburn Lock, where you will be able to enjoy delicious snacks and drinks. Route map and GPX file below:
The Non-Conventionals 2023. (https://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_5459964.html)
Non-conventionals being well-known for their low faff and enthusiasm for getting up in the morning...
-
It is a lovely cafe, but I couldn't imagine the VeloVision lot being up that early.
-
Just be me then :)
-

I usually leave early on the Monday morning but if he lets me know when he can be there I may be able to adapt. If he or you are visiting the Rally come and find me and we can discuss.
-
n00b question - bike security.
Do I need to lug a proper lock down with me? I just don't want to.
-
The bike security arrangement is an assortment of crowd-control barriers distributed throughout the field for people to lock their bikes to. Sometimes they don't even fall over.
In terms of risk, there have been (I think overnight?) thefts in the past, so some sort of lock is prudent. Where on the 'London station' to 'cafe lock' spectrum it should be is less clear. I'd suggest that maximum security is unnecessary, but I've either been locking up a recumbent (which is surely not the thief's first choice in a field of thoroughly decent conventional bikes) or securing my Brompton by putting it inside a motor vehicle.
A smart bike thief would obtain suitable vintage cycle gear in the trade show, change into it in the loos and then ride off inconspicuously on whatever unsecured cycle has been left outside while its owner nips for a pee.
-
I'd suggest that York Rally is exactly the type of event likely to attract smart thieves, and that for that reason, unusual, high-end cycles of all sorts, including recumbents, are likely to attract them. But IIRC the thieves who were chased away by security last year were petty pilferers of loose items.
-
Fiiine.

Tent stowage at BFC (&Arabella) campervan if needed, not planning to rush off.
-
I'll be there from Wednesday to Monday - I've volunteered as one of the organising group. I will be taking part in the 'non - standard' ride on Saturday with a vintage PDQ recumbent. And apart from that mostly on duty round the event. Look out for a blue and white T4 campervan (and / or an old gadgey in a black sun hat).
-
Anyone going up from London?
Anyone know of any cheap B&B nearby?
-
Non-conventionals being well-known for their low faff and enthusiasm for getting up in the morning...
And the ease by which they can travel hundreds of miles by public transport to attend in the first place.
I plan to be there – assuming the Dundee cycling contingent hasn't nabbed the only suitable hanging space on the only suitable train that had a bookable bike space remaining – but I shan't be there until gone lunchtime. The amount of faff I've experienced already thanks to train operators, and sundry non-train related issues, means I'm thinking about calling time on the whole endeavour after this year. I don't own a car, and hiring is a ruinously expensive additional cost when I already prefer to own a motorbike, which as any fule kno is nearly a lost cause for transporting bicycles (if not entirely (https://gearjunkie.com/motors/motorcycle-bike-racks)) which wasn't my plan anyway.
-

Ditto on the "Tango'd" Windcheetah (which I haven't really ridden since its restoration).
But some hard graft beforehand setting out all the camping pitches (and packing it all away afterwards).
-
The weather could be interesting, yet again. Touch wood the forecast is accurate until Sunday. ::-) Meanwhile a Butterfly over the Antlantic........
-
My take on it is that it's leaning towards scorcio, which may bring associated thunderbolt and lightning. The alternative option is that the relentless northeasterly comes back and makes it neither of those. The only thing that we can rely on is an astronomical[1] pollen count.
[1] In space no one can hear you sneeze?
-
I've been dodging thunder storms all afternoon and evening with some success (just drenched in two 5 minutes downpours).🙂

OI! Don't blame me!
Anyway. I don't think I've booked (although I've been wrong before) so we are going to be turning up and hoping for the best. Clarion will definitely be car assisted, I may or may not ride.
:D :D :D
-
Looing forward to seeing you all again. :)
-
First train of the trip cancelled.
-
I have arrived and will be helping the helpers :o .this could be interesting ;)
-
My train situation just gets worse, this one goes to Middlesbrough :(
Riding from there, I’ll be there this evening sometime I guess. I’m 6 foot with a mullet, come say hello if you see me
-
Because it is more roomy and comfortable I shall be driving up in my old faithful W reg Honda Accord. Also I am picking up an old friend of mine who has just undergone a major operation and for the first time in 40 years he cannot ride to the rally. Got chairs, gas and tea bags to entertain visitors so look me up.
-
Possibly rain this evening. Saturday looks OK, Sunday another wet evening. I'll pack the waterproofs after all.

I’ve arrived at the racecourse. Currently in the holding pen.

-
On my train with the bike dangling. There were 4 bikes in a space for 2 when it got into the station.
-
Tent up. Kim, Barakta, Cycleman, Luke, Bikepacker & Canardly here as well.
-
It’s raining. I’m off to the beer 🍺 tent.
-
Have a good time.
-
I’ve had a pizza. I’m now at a table with an empty beer glass casting significant looks at Canardly.
No. Not those type of significant looks ….

What number were you? 29?

That was me. Red waterproof & a Tilley.
-
We've retired to bed after barakta reached her generator noise tolerance. Will see how we feel in the morning about being ready for the official Naburn ride at 9:30. Otherwise I expect there will be a splinter group respecting tradition in the evening.

A chat with D.A.L.E & Canny Colin followed by a Close Encounter with Clarion & Nye in the washblock.

Naburn ride is going well: We're at the café but half the group seem to have missed the turn and gone shooting of into the outer solar system. I'm guessing that cycleman lead them astray :)

I'm about to head to York, later than
planned hoped following a luggage malfunction and resulting change of bike. Is there a yacf area I should look for to pitch my tent?

Concur.

Deano's heading in that direction to see what's occurring and CrinklyAuntie, CrinklyUncle and m'niblings are over at the racecourse I believe. I'm struggling (especially since I'm now nearly 4 weeks into a ridiculous bout of sinusitus) with the idea of heading out into the heat tbh. Are ppl around or riding this evening? I'll have a better chance of not melting then, maybe...
-
Barakta and I have already been to Naburn today , so we're thinking if there's a traditional pubbe ride at 6 we might just escort them as far as the Sun, perform an orbital slingshot manoeuvre, and loop back to the rally...
-
6pm at the fence for the pub. 8)

The new tent has been christened by its first earwig...

On my way! That sounds idyllic. It’s still too hot.

Can confirm that the showers are hot again.

Very much enjoyed seeing all the yacfers again and the new ones I met for the first time. I can now put a face to their forum names.
Sorry for disappearing quickly on Sunday afternoon but with impending storm and my friend Graham not looking too well (he had had a major operation a few days ago) we decided to decamp and head home.
-
York Rally was excellent, really enjoyed my trip. Nice meeting/seeing you all.
-
Great seeing many of you in person, & chatting even though it was generally somewhere near the toilet block but think I spent most of my weekend running around the site or in hq dealing with queries & questions, I will pass on the positive feedback to the rest of the committee, please feel free to let me have any feedback good or bad, & any suggestions of how we can change or improve things we cannot guarantee anything but we can try. We are trying our best to book good weather again for next year
-
You do start wondering if "Toilet block meet & greet" should be a programmed item...
I really enjoyed it this year, possibly helped by not having any rushing-about[1] commitments to worry about (I even managed to wander round the trade show). It's a shame that barakta was in no state for a ride on Sunday.

I’ve been around here (and its predecessor) on and off for quite a few years, mostly skulking, but I think I met more forumites over this weekend than in all that time. It was excellent to see those that I did, and sorry to those I missed (and my brain is still matching forum names to actual people - mine’s not too difficult ;)).
It was my first visit to the rally and I had a splendid time. 50 km ride over from Leeds (on a sub-optimal bike) was the furthest of the year for me, so that was a win to start with. I took the train back to avoid a repeat of the unpleasant dual carriageway experience on the way over, and also because I lost the strap holding my rear luggage on and had to make do with the belt from my shorts (fortunately for any spectators not the ones I was wearing at the time).
Such a great array (peloton?) of weird and wonderful cycles and people!
Thanks to the crinkly one for accommodating us for a few hours which happened to coincide with a storm.
-
I really enjoyed the weekend . It was great to meet old & new friends . A big thank you too the organisers & volunteers . I have sold the blue trike . But fear not the Spontaneous beer induced " try a trike" ride around the field . Will return with a smaller frame ;D
-
Great to see old friends and new, thanks for all the help I have been given and special thanks to the hard working organisers and helpers who make this event so special 😀
-
Enjoyed the rally again, and meeting up with new and familiar faces. Big thanks to Rachel and all the other crew
A bit warm at times, the factor 50 came out often.
My elderly and patched Exustars disintegrated on site, leading to a display of my new toenail colour but the good guys at Spa Cycles fetched a new pair for me on the Sunday. These are in a splendid blue colour and were comfy enough to forget about for the rest of the weekend and 6 hour ride home.
See you all again soon I hope, my time should be more my own from this year on.
-
Nice to see old friends as ever. Was too hot for me and I actually felt quite unwell at times. Not sure if it was heat exhaustion, WHY, or a case of old fogey. I was not the best or most affable company. Very little alcohol was consumed (and not much food come to that). Strange thing was feeling cold and shivery on saturday night in the tent, although the temp was 20 deg C. I actually put another layer on. The four showers being out was a right PIA. Now rethinking camping and associated kit when travelling by car.
-
It's hard to believe it was very nearly a week ago already. Time flies by when
you're having fun you're the driver of a train you pile right back into the day job of spreadsheets and contracts.
I wasn't sure, actually, that I was really going to enjoy the rally, because of various factors, but I was lucky with getting my choice of dangly bike space on the train out of Waverley. The Dundee Contingent clearly had other plans and didn't bother to turn up, though the train nearly didn't turn up either which left me with a frantic couple of minutes for hoisting things aloft and wrangling panniers.
No sooner had I arrived at the epicentre of the action at the Knavesmire (the beer tent) than I was engaged in conversation with Geoff and Fiona and Claire from the BHPC, which led to an even longer conversation with Chris Parker from ICE Trikes, in which my arms and neck slowly burned because I hadn't brought my factor 30. I had splurged last summer on a big floppy hat though and was glad for it. Toilet block meet and greet ensued with Kim and barakta and someone I didn't know. I found myself camped next to the world's most quietly spoken yet talkative man, and the world's sweariest lady, who was totally out of her depth at the rally having been somewhat dragged there by a friend. That evening was spent in pursuit of pizza, at which I failed because the shop wasn't there anymore; as backup, I decided to get fish and chips, but I failed at that too because they'd run out of fish. Rode back to the rally and promptly met LeeW and MrLeeW who were heading out to Naburn on a DIY not-Velovision ride - and I had a pannierful of sausage and chips to eat... As is tradition when camping, I slept incredibly badly.
I spent Sunday morning in yet another long conversation with Sweary Lady, then noting the impending weather forecast, decided I ought to do a bike ride. Skilfully again avoiding conversation with the Welsh Guy with the Extremely Wiry Grey Hair, I rode out to Naburn for my obligatory photo, and Saturn for my other obligatory photo, then figured I may as well ride to at least Pluto. Once back I spent a few minutes checking out the trade tents and then returned to the beer tent to meet my friend Amanda and her partner, whereupon BCCletts turned up on a flying visit, regaling us immediately with stories of train timetables, broken forks, gigantic thorns through tyres, and variously similar bicycle decrepitude. My friend went home and then the tent suddenly got very busy because it thundered, and 23.7 million tonnes of water was too much for the tent roof which promptly leaked onto my shorts, while Kim studiously monitored the rain gauge outside. After some playful humour (I think, I couldn't quite tell) with Darren and Sweary Lady who was apparently now enjoying herself, I was suddenly completely out of spoons and ran away to my tent to hide and have tea. Talkative Man thought that was a splendid time to engage me in conversation, which at least was about bicycle touring. I still slept really badly though.
For Monday after goodbyes with Kim and cycleman I had a nice random ride around York and found a lovely bakery where I got supplies for lunch on the train, then got lost six times before I remembered which road went to the station. And magically, I had my choice of dangly bike spaces again! I managed as far as about Newcastle and then slept until Berwick. My brush with The Plague still hangs over me, after a couple of months, and I was completely done in by the time I'd cycled home up the many hills. Next time, and there may be a next time, I'm actually tempted to forgo bicycle for motorbike.
-
So, I wasn't there, Maybe next year.
n00b question - bike security.
Do I need to lug a proper lock down with me? I just don't want to.
At the weekend I met someone whose Brompton and his wife's Thorn were both stolen from the Rally. The Thorn was recovered, found dumped in some bushes, the Brompton was not. He'd had it 24 years. >:(

Sad and a mixture of anger and disappointment for the organisers as well. Despite 24 hour security it is a very big site with plenty of access points, we think the toe rags had a look and came back in the early hours with a bolt cutter, which made short work of the cable lock securing those two bikes once they had made sure nobody was nearby. Unusual yellow Brompton with a customised setup including a double chainset but seems unlikely that it will be recovered, they are very saleable.
-
From memory there were a couple riding through the site on mopeds which I thought most odd at the time. Possibly reccying the place?

At 2.00am on Sunday I walked down to the toilet block and didn't see any security patrol.

Randomly-timed response follows ::-)...
Hello! I was the someone you didn't know
I *always* get lost when cycling in the centre of York.
Very sorry to hear about the theft. Such a big site and open to the public, security must be a nightmare.

I think I know the answer to this but: did anyone do an audax Summer Arrow or Dart to the Rally this year? Just checking for Awards purposes. iddu organised it in previous years and thinks not, but just in case anyone knows better.
Thank you
