Do you not mean NCN7? NCN1 follows the north sea coast and is a very nice ride in itself but without quite such dramatic scenery.

... to complaining about being unable to book a space on the ferry because the cost is no longer putting tourists off.

I catch up on the Arran Banner when I'm at my mum's and I've not seen anything to that effect.

Thanks for all the advice.

We now have a trip planned both walking and riding (we're taking the CAR! too) staying near Loch Lomond, then going Bute, Islay, Jura and stopping off near Alston (not Scotland) on the way home. We have a habit of enjoying seeing huge areas of countryside and as a result spending far too long in the car when we go away so have tried to limit the car time on this trip.

Arran has 2 boats through the summer, as does mull so there's less space pressure there.
Harris and Lewis are generally at or near capacity all summer on all three routes.
