« on: 31 March, 2008, 10:19:28 pm »
Probably the most talked about ride on Cycling Fora after the L2B and deservedly so;

http://www.cycleisland.co.uk/

Don't forget 2 for 1 on the ferries

www.wightlink.co.uk

and pre-entry also available; I'll be there for the 5th time.

I'm going to be there, camping for the weekend and doing the ride with my son. If all goes to plan it'll be his first 100K (albeit not an Audax).

I really enjoyed the island part of last year's New Forest On and Off Shore, so I'm looking forward to this one.

I'll be going down on the Saturday by train from London.  Anyone fancy sharing the ferry to qualify for the 2 for 1?

I've probably got a virtual friend but if he pulls out will let you know

Cheers Martin.  Actually I've just realised that Wightlink don't do the South'n - E.Cowes route anyway.  I'll be going by Red Funnel.

Word of warning.  I've just tried to make a cycle reservation for the London-Southampton train on Saturday - none available for any trains that day.  I didn't even bother trying for the ones back on Sunday evening.

I think I'll have to bag the bike up and take it as luggage.  Has anyone ever had to do this?

I think I've just answered this for you on the CTC Forum  ;)

But for anyone who doesn't frequent it...

SWT have major engineering that weekend with no trains through Basingstoke - the mainline to Southampton - so firstly your train will be diverted via Petersfield/Havant.
That will simply add time to the journey but cycle carriage should still be OK.
I use these lines a LOT with all kinds of bikes and it really isn't a problem. There are no reservations available because I don't believe they are even possible on this route.

The trains are either 4-car blue trains (sorry don't know the proper jargon) which make up either 4, 8 or 12 carriage trains or 5-car white units making up 5 or 10 carriages.
Each 4-car unit takes 2 cycles in an open shared use area next to the 1st Class. In practice a LOT more bikes can fit - I've seen up to six in each 2 bike space!
The 5-car white units making 5 or 10 carriage trains. Each 5-car unit has two dedicated bike areas each taking three bikes, so that's officially 6 or 12 bikes per train.

You shouldn't have any problems just wheeling the bikes on, especially getting on at London where the trains will be empty. Your biggest prob could be inconsiderate passengers blocking the bike area with their luggage. If so pick up a copy of the current SWT mag E-Motion where a response to a query letter makes it clear that bikes have priority in shared use areas
...An oily chain can help too when there is designer luggage around.

...but I never suggested that; no, not one little bit.

Don't worry. all will be OK.

The 2 for 1 does not apply to Portsmouth - Fishbourne, the one route we all want to use.

Bike reservations aren't even possible on the train I'll most likely be using, and it's the only service from as far as Cardiff/Bristol to the South coast, and only allows two bikes per train - on a good day ;D

Would I be best off trying to package up the bike in some way and carrying it on like that? If so, any advice would be welcome

This year, we are again piloting an optional preregistration process for the Wootton checkpoint only. Our objective is to try and improve the speed of getting participants registered on the day and off on the ride. Depending on the success of the pilot, we may roll out to all or selected checkpoints next year.

If you are planning to start from the Wootton checkpoint this year, and would like to take part in the pilot, simply follow the link below and complete your details. You will receive an automated mail confirming your registration.

probably getting the wheeleater ferry and starting from Bembridge; rehydrating at Ryde 'spoons

No, no, no young man!  Rehydration is traditionally undertaken at the delightful Fishbourne Inn, which is only a 3 mile ride from Ryde Pier.

Much, much nicer than a nasty Wetherspoons!   :hand:

I'll  be on the ride, but to be different I'll be starting at Alverstone; we are camping for the weekend rather than travelling there and back the same day.

It also won't be a pub crawl - I'll be escorted by my son on his first 100k, so we'll need to keep up a steady pace. Keep an eye out for us as you all steam past on your way to the next refreshment stop!

More important, chaps: where and when are we starting out on Saturday evening? I am being entertained by the delightful C and V, so.....

We will have to include the delightfully named Fawcett Inn in that area.

and the fast cat's not the nicest way over to the Island either, that honour probably goes to Red Funnel

What's wrong with it? I've already got my ticket bought - it was the fastest way over there (important because I hate spending time on boats/ships)

there's nothing wrong with it; just that

1 It doesn't give you the lovely deck top view that you get from the car ferry (which I happen to like as I only go over to the IoW once a year)
2.It's highly dodgy trying to zig-zag along Ryde pier as the roadway is made of railway sleepers with road-bike wheel sized gaps between them (but the train avoids this and is free)

it is the fastest way over there but by the time you add getting along the pier and to the start of the ride not much in it.

or there's the hovercraft; get your nice hub bearings pressure-washed in salt water  ;D
