Working on the philosophy that the best camera to use is the one that you've got with you, I decided to try and get a few shots of Frank Turner at his gig at the Roundhouse last night (http://bicycleslut.wordpress.com/2010/03/25/frank-turner-at-the-roundhouse-camden/). I used my little Pentax Optio S6, with the flash off, zoomed up to the limits of its lens. We were standing behind the lighting desk, so I could see whenever the engineer went for the big house lights and used this as my cue to shoot.
Although they're as grainy as hell, I only had to crop one of these images and I'm really quite pleased with how they turned out. Getting half decent pictures at gigs isn't easy, but I'm dead chuffed with these.

Very impressive!
Tricky things, gigs. massive changes in lighting levels, sometimes very good lighting. Catching the performer's pose, position and lighting all at the same time is a challenge.
Really like no 2
-
Good idea standing by the lighting desk. A gig always looks best from there. Offering to buy the op a drink can often get you some helpful states if s/he's feeling generous (and the set allows). ;)
If you really want to capture the energy of a gig, you need to get closer, in the security pit if you possibly can, but it's a bit of a gamble - for your equipment as much as your shots. You'll be more likely to have a lamp shining directly down your lens.
Good photos, by the way. :)

Nice one.
Probably best gig photo I've taken was of Bob Log III at The Garage on Highbury Corner several years ago. Was using a Minolta 500 something, SLR, 35mm film, probably something like Ilford 100.

Got a few good ones of my friends the Bee Stings (http://www.beestings.co.uk/gallery/index.shtml) a few years ago too.

Black and white works fabulously for moody stuff like that, doesn't it?
Loving the fighter pilot look ;D

No passive tobacco fumes there.

Frank Turner! We try to make it whenever he comes to Nottingham. Good gig?
(Oops - never mind. I see from your link that it was brilliant)
-
Reminds me to go and dig out some of my old pics. Must find the box with them in.
Gig photos can be technically challenging but are actually relatively easy with non-auto everything if you have a technical brain.
-
You should have a Leica really, for the quiet shutter, the ability to hand hold at stupidly low speeds (I've done 1/8th with no apparent blur) and the lenses that work wide open. It used to be the only camera that professional theatre photogs were allowed to use because of the noise.
-
That reminds me of the only gig I ever photographed - on a Leica M6 with 35 and 75mm f1.4 lenses, Fuji 1600 asa film, whatever that was called, using "available darkness".

He told my line manager to f**k off back in the Seventies. I think that's why he got the gong.

I Take it this isn't the Roundhouse in Wardour street where I worked and lived in 1979?

I am not enjoying this thread.
I started serious photography back in the seventies, and I got me a yashica TL Electro-X (http://camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/Yashica_TL), and I got myself the 1.2 lens (http://www.flickr.com/photos/26971753@N05/3502300600/), a perfect setup for available light (heavy camera, vertical metal shutter, that lens). I used to hang around with bands at the Grope & Wanker and did some publicity stuff for one or two startups. At the time the Hope & Anchor was often used by big bands for warm up gigs before large events the next day. So, being in the know I managed to be there and shoot stuff like the Stones (I remember them billed as The Sheikhs of R&B - always wondered if that led to the Sultans of Swing), the Man Band, Sam Apple Pie (anyone else remember Dave Samson's rendition of "I like to Masturbate"?), Feelgood, Lou Reed, Fleetwood Mac (or some incarnation), The 'oo.
However, I kept everything in a little darkroom not that far away, that I used to use. And one day, it was all cleared out. Completely. I don't suppose those negs got kept, even.

Nothing particular about these, a pub jam, apart from ISO 2500, f1.8 1/30 or less.

Really pleased with the last one (Fleet Foxes blerk) -- I was friggin miles away from the stage. And the second is #2 son at a gig. Does this count?

Not great, but nice to get.

These were taken at a seafront 'Battle of the Bands' competition a couple of years ago. I used a Nikon F80 with no flash, using a 300mm zoom from the back of the crowd, rating Ilford HP5+ at 3200. They were enlarged onto Ilford Multigrade at Grade 5 for maximum contrast.

Wish I'd taken my 300 f2.8, but I wasn't actually there to take photos of the gig. Interestingly I was the only photographer there.
