That's what we call the Ash buds - and they've been around for some weeks now.

Little honeysuckle leaves in Daffern's Wood yesterday. Since the maximum temperature was around 2 Celsius & today was a tad cooler, they may have second thoughts...

Birds are singing. On yesterdays hour & a half ride to the work party I counted 7 blue tits, 7 coal tits, 2 great tits (plus a probable which was hard to distinguish form a much nearer blue tit), 2 robins & a wren. The contrast between the great tits was intriguing. one was singing the textbook two-note song; the other was improvising in a big way, without any audible competition.
Then at the reserve, as we were clearing scrub at the sides of a ride, a carpet of small primrose leaves became visible. Hopefully a bit more sunlight will encourage them.

Ah. Now they are more developed, I see that they are not crocuses.

What are they called?

Thomasinia - they are a type of crocus.

Our Daphne is about to flower, the Aconites are flowering too, and so is the Sarcacocca.

Two celandine flowers were opening up in the usual earliest location (the roadside bank S of Hampton in Arden church). It seems far too early, & what's really weird, the sun at noon wasn't high enough to shine on the bank over the houses on the other side of the road.

Swallowed my first insect on Wednesday. It was while I was working rather than on the ride to the nature reserve (Whitacre Heath), which specialises in voracious mossies & horse flies. Near the end of the ride there I had spotted yellow flowers, which turned out to be dandelions, but a tad further alond the grassy verge I counted 11 Celandines opening up. They could well have some pollinating insects to help their purpose.

Today, meanwhile, was a day of birdsong. My first songthrush this year was followed by 6 more during a 2 hr ride to work. Also the first chaffinch, followed by another 4. For both species the morning songs were early season subsongs. I'm perplexed that the evening ride home (we finished laying the hedge very late, so I had a lot of time to enjoy a truly gorgeous lingering sunset) the thrushes had become much more confident & inventive. To complete the tally, a greater spotted woodpecker drumming, followed by another while we were working; first blackbird singing when I arrived at work, first woodpigeons this year, close to work area and a very noisy, but obviously very communicative, rookery (sorting out the pecking order for this year? ;-).

Someone was mowing their lawn the other day.

Mine gets mowed 2 or 3 times a year whether it needs it or not.

Skylark near Selby yesterday. Don't think I've heard one this early in the year before.
