Gas hob spark ignitor not working
« on: 17 January, 2024, 08:45:25 am »
Following a spot of cleaning of my gas hob, one of the four spark ignitors produces no spark.  It's a plug in (from memory, as ICBA to delve into the cupboard to look for the lead last night) design and pushing any of the hob knobs (ooh, biscuits) should cause sparks at all burners.

Setting my multimeter to its highest (1kV) range, putting the probes on ignitor tip and ground suggets I'm getting voles to the ignitor tip but presumably not enough to jump the gap to make a spark.  I've cleaned the outside of the ceramic insulator that goes up around the ignitor but still no spark.

What next?

You said you've cleaned the insulator; have you cleaned the spark tip and burner?

I was going to say exactly the same, but opted for flippancy instead.

Burner is clean.  I think I cleaned the tip but will give it another go this evening.

(Jurek, now that Swan Vestas no longer ignite on impact, they are No Fun and not welcome)

How did you clean it?  A bit of water can play havoc.

Light all the burners with a match or fag lighter and run them on high for a minute or two to dry it all out. Then see if it's fixed.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

He needs something to light the match with.
It is simpler than it looks.

All burners have been run since cleaning, so everything should be dry.

I swapped a match with someone who had a hole in their bucket that needed mending.

I've got a Neff but its ignition system hasn't worked for years.  So I use a nifty USB rechargeable plasma thing off Amazon for about £10.

The spark igniter on our gas hob sometimes fails to ignite the gas after the burners have been cleaned.

This resolves after a while.
I blame moisture ingress.

Doh! I have 3 of those (camping/caravan ING stuff) and have been messing about with matches for a month since some of our ignitors went into failure mode.
