Lappy HD woes

Lenovo thinkpad purchased about three months ago. Win 7
Failed to boot. Entering Setup it says there is no internal HDD. Combined with the initial clicking and now nasty scratching noises. I suspect that the HD is borked. Does the panel agree?

The current plan is to take it back to where it was purchased (staples). I suspect however it would be quicker and more productive in the long run just to swap in a new drive and restore from the back up disks that I providently made while new. Any thoughts?

3 months would be close to Lenovo's DOA period, so return it and see if you can get a replacement rather than repair. IIRC Lenovo class within 90 days of delivery to be DOA.
