Carbon Rim brake question
« on: 26 April, 2008, 08:55:10 am »
If I got myself another set of wheels with carbon rims, would I need to change the brake pads every time I used them instead of my usual wheels? If so, I don't think I'll go for carbon.

Thanks in advance.

You 'can' use ordinary rims on braking surfaces but there are several problems;
- Carbon rims apparently get through pads quicker
- Carbon pads are softer and don't catch grit etc. Once you've caught grit, you'll score the carbon surface which is a bad thing.
- Warranty issues in the case of failure; they may use it as a get out clause. Depends on who you go with.

What wheels were you thinking of?

Zipp 404s. I'm gonna be in the US for a while, and I could get some then.

Sorry to take the topic off conversation, but why the 404s rather than any of the other models/makes?

They have to be clinchers. I was looking at FSAs but I think they have discontinued the clincher version. I quite like the Campag shamal, but they aren't very deep profiles, not carbon though. What else do you like.

They have to be clinchers.

In that case you don't need to worry as I'm fairly sure zipps clinchers have ali rims!
