Reshaping a leather saddle ?

Got a used 80's Ideale 90 TB saddle, similar to the one above, from a trade. It has not been properly cared for and is quite out of shape. The leather seem OK and not to dry. It has seen many rainy miles but never been treated it with Proofide! Believe the guy has had it since new but he didn't know what the stuff was.

So, my question is if I can reshape it somewhat back to its original form?
Read in another forum about soaking the saddle over night and packing it with old newspapers in the back. Then tying it up in some way and letting it dry. Anyone here that tried this?
Other good tips?
