I did some checking. Firstly these are both in towns, it would be necessary to be higher than the surrounding buildings. The second thing is that whilst most Dutch mills are used for lifting water for drainage these mills ground grain for the distillery trade. There seemed to be a bit of a conflict to build bigger and better and conversely concern about the bigger mills taking the wind and therefore the trade of the other mills.

For the same reason that the median Dutchman is about eight feet tall - so they continue to function when the country is under six feet of water ;D



Sergeant Aten, in the middle, is a normal-height USAnian.  Thomas van Schaik - he of the glasses and shiny head - is bending his knees in order to come out only half a head taller.
