« on: 04 October, 2019, 09:26:50 pm »
Looking at adding a Points game to the ACH Steam Ride SR: www.steamride.co.uk

Close encounters only... e.g. cows behind a fence in a field don't count..

Points       Sighting  'wild-life'
1    horse, sheep, cows
2    dog, cat, fox, bulls (crossing road), pheasant, rabbit
3    Deer, kestrel, kite, hare
4    Stoat, weasel, badger, lamas, snakes, Eagle, Owl
5    Albino Deer, Platoon in camouflage on maneuvers, UFO  :o

Any more suggestions to add to the list  & points...

I'm reminded of a report of a trout (or was it a salmon?) on uk.rec.cycling's novelty roadkill thread.  Fish should be pretty high scoring...

Was thinking live..  some else may have already counted that one earlier  :o
...pheasant, rabbit, hare added :-)

Good point, Eagle 4 :-)

I'll check if Eskdalemuir is on the LeJog  route  next year :-)

Frogs and Toads? - Low scoring due to abundance in some seasons. Should only be counted if you avoid running over them.

Slugs and Snails - only get points for the ones you do run over

It won't be as that heads to Abington and then Paisley.

A view from the distant but not quite Pingu's distant North:
Eskdalemuir road is good for Slugs and Toads.
The A7 between Longtown and LAngholm was pretty food for Pheasants at the weekend (see my facebook photos on Audax Ecosse and SBR...)
I had a close encounter with Cows somewhere near Morebattle (should gain more points for being bloody scary to be in that close proximity)
Deer... too many points the Snow Roads could prove VERY high scoring.

Owl?

I would count a hare as worth more than a rabbit.

Would motor vehicles count?  I saw two today on my bike ride.  One had been there a while because it had that police tape wrapped around it.  (A black van).

Other was a black saloon car, looked quite recent as the tyre marks in the grass verge were clear.  Both of them well embedded with the bonnet crumpled and stuck in the ditch and hedge.
Sunshine approaching from the South.

First time in 1,000 years.

I once had a rabbit fall from a m'way bridge exactly between me and the guy alongside me. Gave us a hell of a fright !

was it a few miles south of morebattle near towford  ?

I got stuck mid heard a while back - a bit worrying as they had calves with them, thankfully nothing happened

A Point for each cow in the road.. Brave Heart!!  I think I would have given them a wide berth, if they had calves with them  :-\

Missed that, can't remember exactly where.

I once had a rabbit fall from a m'way bridge exactly between me and the guy alongside me. Gave us a hell of a fright !

I narrowly avoided worse than that one morning, cars in front of me stopped suddenly on the road under the tay road bridge going into newport with shocked drivers wandering on the road shortly there after.
I dodged round by the path at the back of the village having worked out what had happened.

I think squirrels should be on that list. I and a clubmate had a very close (suicidally close) encounter with one in North Wales (not far from Bala IIRC) a few years ago

Especially in January when they should be tucked up asleep.

How much for a troop of wild boar crossing the road 50 metres ahead?

(Stand dead still and try not to tremble.)
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

How much for missing a boar by about 1m, when descending at nearly 40kph in the dark?

A few years back on a kinda witham cycling lead ride one of the guys I was with realised about half a mile from the pub his sunnies were still there. By now it was dark but I offered to come back with him. Eyewear recovered we set off to chase down the rest of the group and were progressing at a fair lick when he took a bat to the  throat which took his breath away for a few seconds. Condition of bat was unknown unfortunately.

Once I was on a road that bisects a golf course and heard a loud 'phwack' beside me and watched a golf ball disappearing into the bushes. An over-rated past-time.
