What happened to my garlics?

Lifted my garlics yesterday, as the majority of the foliage had collapsed, and I was concerned about rot. Some ha£ rotted at the neck, but the rest was reasonably good. However more than half the heads had started to separate our, as below. Anyone know the cause of this?
