Routesheet instruction: opinions please

Here is a junction, three from the finish of the Snow Roads. Riders should turn left into the minor road, where the car is coming out. The major road swings hard right.
Do I say: "L (sp SO) B955 Cortachy" or "L B955 sp Cortachy", or "SO B955 sp Cortachy". The sign, partly obscured by the tree, at the junction indicates a left turn for the B955, not straight on. 

EDIT: I did a 200 DIY yesterday and took some more foties of some junctions of the lower half of the Snow Roads route: I'll put them in the Gallery later if anyone's interested?

I'd say L because the riders will be deviating from their current carriageway.

Not having seen many route sheets I'd make Greenbanks' line:

L (appears SO) sp Cortachy* (B955)

To me a fork is where the road splits and there are no road markings to make it obvious which way is continuing on the current road, and which way is turning off the current road. More common on minor roads.

I wouldn't class the above junction as a fork because there are road markings.

FWIW the Severn Across routesheet has an instruction:-

L (physically SO) on RH bend sp TOWN CENTRE

The other end of the spectrum I've seen a routesheet that didn't even include directions on it unless necessary. The above junction would have just been:

B955 Cortachy

That's what I'd expect - or, if I saw that instruction I'd visualise something very close to the photo

I like this but would add (effectively straight on). The whole thing abreviated to the same standard as the rest of the route sheet of course.

I would put "L on RH bend sp Cortachy (B955)".

If the roads were of more equal status I might put "L (actual SO) sp Cortachy..."

As it is it looks more like a turn than a straight on.

PS: The town/loch should correspond to the sign at the bend (you can see it on the corner across from the car) not the one before it.

Yes.


Provided you pop round and stop the clock before any riders come through.

I think all of the above instructions are clear.

Yes it's left.  Yes it's on a RH bend.  Yes it appears SO.   Most importantly of course it is labelled as B955 which the other road isn't.

I think I'd have "L (SO) B955 SP Cortachy" (unless you were actually going through Cortachy in which case it'd be in capitals.

As long as the routesheet was in miles that would ensure no problems at all.
