“Thames Valley” illustrated with stock photo of some arriviste USAnian namesake river instead of the one that flows through Oxfod, Reading, Staines, London’s famous London, ect.  i diskard them.

Well spotted, I was pondering the same. I suppose it flows past New London. Also, they do pronounce Thames phonetically, which is always a delight. They also now say Nor-witch rather than Norrich for Norwich, unless they're really old people, who cling to the latter. Reminds me of the time I was in Tanzania with a good old southern boy, and his pronunciation of the country name really didn't borrow from either of the established pronunciations. Locals would gather to hear it. It meandered like the Mississippi.

My great aunt Peta, who hailed from Himeville in SA, pronounced Tanzania as tan-ZAR-nia.  Orange shitgibbon pronounces it tan-ZAY-nia.

Trump’s pronunciation is actually correct. I’m surprised he didn’t go with Tarzania though.

Compared to Ben Carlin (plus rolling cast of wives) who repeatedly attempted to circumnavigate the planet (and eventually succeeded, surprisingly) in an amphibious jeep this seems entirely reasonable.  Yes, those amphibious jeeps noted of having the buoyancy of a rock in anything greater than a 4" swell.

If you get the opportunity to watch the 'it's a small world' 2 part interview (leftpondian televisual presentation m'lud) it's well worth it.  Barking mad in all the right ways.  Really - absolutely barking.

I read the first of Mr Carlin's books, about his Atlantic crossing as a small Mr Larrington and even then thought “NUTTER”.

I'd heard of him before. Amazing, the lengths people will go to in order to get out of Northam.

He strikes me as an absolute idiot. Didn't conduct any sea trials, no idea of fuel consumption (originally set off with 200 galleons, final successful trip took 735 and still ran out, refueled by a ship). No idea of handling of car/boat, and had to construct new rudders to make it steer.

An absolute idiot. His only virtue was perseverance.

Back in the nineties, I was briefly retained as a consultant to a group planning to do an amphibious vehicle circumnavigation. This was because, at the time, I was one of the few people in the country to have travelled overland in eastern Siberia and they wanted information and advice on the region. Though they weren't all that keen on my advice, which was to wait for winter and drive down the rivers. Amphibious vehicles might cope with land and water, but they certainly aren't up to trackless bog.

I've no idea if they even started. Certainly sounds as if they didn't finish.

They said they were first alerted to the alleged forgery by a Portuguese maintenance and repair company in June, prompting a scramble to discover the extent of the issue.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency, in a filing first reported by Bloomberg, said in August it was examining reports of parts with suspected falsified documents supplied by AOG. Britain's CAA said in August it was "investigating the supply of a large number of suspect unapproved parts".

I guess the CAA got the heads up from EUASA.

UK regulations are exactly the same as EASA, and are governed by international agreement. AOG appears to be a company acting criminally. Its location in the UK is irrelevant to the case against it.

Yes, that was a tongue-in-cheek comment about the Brits changing the rules.

It would be interesting to find out how this went on for so long before it was spotted.

There seems to be a real buzz of excitement about this story. But as yet, I've not heard anyone explain exactly how one communicates via vibrating probe...

Indeed.

I looked up AOG. I think it was set up as a scam by a couple of Venezuelans/Colombians, & is probably a front for one or more makers of fake parts. The employee profiles on LinkedIn are almost all fake or probably fake: photos lifted off the net (e.g. Shutterstock), no other Internet presence, & an extraordinary lack of connections.

The founder calls himself British, but he's called himself Venezuelan elsewhere, & there's someone with an address in Venezuela with exactly the same name & birthday. So, either he's really Venezuelan or he's stolen a Venezuelan's profile. Another person who may be real appears to be Colombian.
