The weather will probably make up for the "lack of vertical challenge". My only adventure in Western Scotland was 2 weather warnings in 4 days in early August... one for a storm with 60 mph winds and the other for 100 mm of rain in 24 hours. May could be worse than August

May can be the best month in West Scotland; sunshine without the midges. Weather was great on the late May bank holiday 2010 https://issuu.com/audax-uk/docs/2011_may_arrivee/58

Same amount of climbing as Borders of Belgium by my reckoning, just less Ardennes-y and more bastard choppy.

Funnily enough, that's another ride I was considering for next year too. Highly unlikely to do both though.

The Daylight 600 in a heatwave was a bit different. A ginger haired rider ended up with a very red face decorated with white lines in the shape of his helmet straps.

What happened to the route? The link in the first post now points to a 404 error page.

With a heavy heart I have to choose TINAT. It's an odd weekend to get two big rides - normally it's the bank holiday weekend that gets overloaded with audaxes. (and most folk riding this one will only work Tue+Wed, +maybe THu a.m. )

( Are there any biggies on 26th May? )

Brimstone 600, but nothing bigger than that.

The route has been refined a bit with a few modest tweaks

This is the version thats been submitted with event registration this evening - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/25556906

With the loop round Loch Leven coming before the Corran Ferry, its now 550km to the events only mandatory ferry crossing (its recommended, but optional on the return).

Tempted.  Its not in July which is my no go month.  And I enjoyed the Mille Alba a few years back.

Mrs F. is of the opinion that I should ride this. That's easy to say when you don't have to ride it yourself!

About time I stepped up from 600km. Way things are going I probably won't be working so should have time to do the training.

I see it's in the calendar now. Time to start planning in earnest... I've already floated the idea of my wife spending a long weekend in Edinburgh while I go off and ride my bike.

With the loop round Loch Leven coming before the Corran Ferry, its now 550km to the events only mandatory ferry crossing (its recommended, but optional on the return).

Optional? I love a ferry crossing, especially if the alternative is adding a gratuitous extra 30km to the route...  ;D

its only 30k extra if you don't take the ferry on the way out, not on the return crossing

My understanding is that the loop round Loch Leven is mandatory on the outward journey (to make up the distance), with a control in Kinlochleven to enforce it.

The ferry is then optional on the return leg, but it's 30km extra if you prefer to go round the loch.

Ignore me, I've completely misunderstood the route - I thought that was a ferry crossing at Ballachulish but on zooming in on the map I see it's a road bridge. (A particularly foolish mistake since I actually rode across that very same bridge on my LEJOG last year and remember it well.  )

I think I get it now - the 'optional' ferry crossing on the return leg is back across the Corran ferry, instead of going via Fort William along the A82.

I think I'd like to do this but will need to make the calendar work around TTs.   CTT don't publish their list until first week of Jan.

I rode the Daylight twice in the late 90s but haven't ridden North of the border since then.

I had a feeling this one might fill in line with recent patterns but it looks like there's no limit on rider numbers ?

Entries don't open until 1/1/18 so hopefully shouldn't be full by the time you get your CTT calendar

In the days of old we'd ride the extra 15 mls or so if the South Ballachulish to North Ballachulish Ferry had closed for the day.i think that the bridge was built in the late 70s or early 80s.  You can still see the parking area for the Ferry by the Hotel on the South side!

Now looked at the route.  It has so many roads I want to cycle along.  Time to starting building up the brownie point bank.

Your Dad did a good thing! There used to be a tricky choice: a long wait for the ferry or a tedious drive round.

Hello there.  I've had a few emails about this event - mostly folk in a minor panic that they cant enter.

Worry not - the event opens to entries on 1 January 2018.

Ive also updated the AUK web page http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/18-402/ with some additional information which might be helpful for folk thinking about entering (the info can be accessed via the "route sheet" link).

I plan to recce part of the route over Easter and aim to ride the thing myself the weekend before the calendar event.
