Long Dark Teatime of the Soul

What's this like then? Anyone ridden it? Any good?

Not got many miles in my legs recently, and as such, not very enthusiastic about riding over 200k in December, but if it's easy sailing over the smoothest Scottish roads, through the best scenery Scotland has to offer, I might be temped.

Not a very popular event then?

You'll have to ride it and find out.

I might give it a go. But I'm a bit worried that no one ever returns from it now :-\

It does sound foreboding.
We'll send out a search party if you don't come back.

Good luck.

I rode this route with the organiser a few weeks ago to create the GPX file, route check etc., and I can thoroughly recommend it.

It is about as flat a route as you'll get in these parts, very little traffic, and the café stops are first class.

See you on the 7th

I'm not normally a big fan of straight out and back routes, but two chances for a bowl of soup in Sammy Lings is too good to miss. Incredibly flat route for the Scottish Borders and some super smooth surfaces along the way.

So how did it go?

I was going to make this my first Audax but the forecast of ice and a dose of ManFlu put paid to that!

Great event, really enjoyed (most of) it. Bit of ice on the roads in the morning and seriously cold up at Eskdalemuir. But most of the field made it to the turn just past Longtown before the rain started. Bit grim for a while after lunch, heavy rain and a cross/head wind did dampen the spirits, but before long we turned NE and got a tailwind most of the way home. New cafe at Eskdalemuir was great, very quick service, good food and good value. Rain eased off a bit during the last leg and stopped with about 10km to go. For the whole of the afternoon I think we saw three cars, the roads were incredibly quiet.

Best bit was getting to see a fair few audax friends that I don't often see at this time of year and probably won't see again until about March.

I didn't make it either. Just being a big wuss really. Lack of fitness and the 2 hour drive to get there put me off. Disappointed in myself now. Next year. Definitely.

My first 200 for a long time. I kind of entered on a whim and I thought it would be a rash decision. I didn't think it was that cold at the start and in fact I was never cold all day, or wet, despite it absolutely chucking down around Longtown. I heard a few riders complaining of cold, one in particular. Well, if you will ride with just three quarter longs, FFS ....

Several people suffered punctures, me included. I was only just in sight of Eskdaleuir on the return when I felt the bump, bump, bump. It was just dark and I decided to walk the km or two to the control and fix it there. I was a thorn.

The controls were fantastic, I can't praise them highly enough, especially the Old School House Bistro at Eskdalemuir. What a brilliant place! The numerous staff couldn't have done enough for us and they were bright, cheery, welcoming - I wish every commercial control could be like that but I think we have found the pinnacle  They even attended to my dietary needs and for once I actually enjoyed a good two course meal on a ride. I gave them a generous tip. All the younger staff are volunteers in this community enterprise and appreciate the money from tips, I'm sure.

Leaving the haven of the Old School House it was still raining but the wind was definitely a tail wind. I saw two cars from there to Ettrickbridge and I set my head light to shine farther up the road. Good light, deserted, smooth roads, tail wind, mostly downhill ..... :)  However, I was riding a single speed freewheel on a 63" gear so I couldn't take the same advantage.

I was lantern rouge, predictably, but I was very happy. I sat and chatted with Dick, then Lucy in Maccy D's and it was good to catch up. I'm surprisingly bright today and I don't feel as sore as I thought I might.

I enjoyed meeting some of the old faces again, and some new ones. The route was as near perfect as could be - little navigation, traffic free, scenic and not too demanding. What a brilliant event  :)
