Seems to have gone. What's the best alternative and simplest to make and send routes to my Garmin? I've used but not liked Map my Ride.

Another recommendation for bikehike.co.uk

Having played around with a few different sites, I keep coming back to this one. Integrated OS mapping, a darned accurate elevation figure, simple to plot routes, simple to get them onto the garmin. I can think of a route and be out of the door with it on my Garmin within 10 minutes (I have done this).

The only alternative I've been using recently is to plot out on Google Maps, then put the link to the route through gps visualiser to convert it to a gpx which I can then download. Gives a track for each leg, but this can be stitched together either manually (which I do) or another package (which someone might be able to recommend). A bit more faff, but is super handy for DIY by GPS if you are an AUK.

That's a pita if it is really gone, I was using it for my gpx files

Might come back after xmas though, might just be lack of interest over the break

Check out Ben T (OTP) 's GPXeditor.com as an alternative.
Like bikehike it has no facility to store/share gpx files but if you store yours locally or in Dropbox* its other features make up for it.
The UI is not always very obvious, lots of context-sensitive "right-click" pop-up menus, but a few minutes familiarization and, especially for DIYxGPS, it will be the "one ring to rule them all".

* (or skydrive or your choice of cloud storage)

I suspect (hope) it's a temporary outage. If not, I just lost quite a few routes!

I've never saved a route on it that I haven't copied to my PC, & then my satnav, so I've not lost anything. I hope it hasn't gone, though.

I have many of them on my GPS - but still - goes to show.

Need to create a route - bikehike seems to work.

Silly question - the login/register bit on the course creator is greyed out - any clues???

AIUI Bikehike no longer allows users to store/publish routes through the website, so mebbe there is no need to logon...

Which is exactly why I turned to Bike route toaster instead.

I really hope it has not gone, as it is very useful.

i would just say that my site might not have all the features that others have it does have its author (me) as an active member on here able to help you out with any issues you've got and respond to requests for features.

Why not simply keep a GPX on a local drive?

I use brt as my first choice...

but I have tried them all and I happen to find brt the easiest..

sometimes I will use bikehike to reverse an entire course, but you then need to beware cos it does not reverse one way stuff, and takes you the wrong way round roundabouits, so you might need to do a few amendments... fine if you know that won't matter though...

sure any site can go down for a while now and then, but as suggested by someone above, (not God!!), I keep copies of all my route on my hard drive anyway...

Yep, Google turned off their old API and required everyone to move to the new one: that's what broke BRT in the first place. But they've also begun to charge websites that make heavy use of Google Maps, so the mysterious (Liechtenstein-based?) creator of BRT may have decided that moving to OSM was a smart move.

BRT is back, but the idea of copying the GPX for any route you create is a good one. Permits you to export into any of the GPX-conversant map drawing programs.

The new interface no longer works properly in Safari.

Looks like I'll have to use Firefox...

I like the new site, though in spite of this. All my old routes still stored there too. Not bad for free.

The GPX export (to file) gives a non-standard file that my desktop apps can't use. Even old routes that were worked on last year and have been stored and are still there, now download as unusable.
I daresay it can be worked around by downloading as TCX and then converting elsewhere, haven't tried that yet.
