Kim, in between her timing-equipment-wrangling duties and some rushing-around-in-circles, at the BHPC race day in 'ull where we finally effected a transfer of the Trek she has had lodging in her living room for some time over to the EldestCub. Photographs were taken for comparison, and it would appear the boy is indeed now taller than her. And yes, she did persuade him into a couple of laps between races despite the fact that he was in his steel-toed work boots and was pretty achey due to suffering the after effects of spending half an hour this morning trying to bump start his flat-batteried motorbike - he was meant to be meeting some biker mates this morning for a brew before they went for a ride out and he came to collect me in his car to drive over to collect the Trek. I was delighted to see that despite his recent petrol-head tendencies, riding his bike still makes him grin the exact same grin he's worn on bike rides with Kim since the first one, 13 or 14 years ago.

Watched the start of that (to spot them)...is it as terrifying as it looks?  And what is the knob thing that the rider pulls after starting?

I've only ridden a three-wheeled velomobile, which is mainly terrifying in the sense of the size of the bill should you roll it.  I expect that once you the hang of controlling a streamliner, it's slightly less terrifying than an unfaired machine, as you tend to get bruises rather than road rash if you cock it up.  Plusminus poor visibility and the risk of freezing to DETH because you packed summer cycling clothes expecting to be inside a fairing, which you then have to remove because condensation.

Landing gear:  A couple of retractable legs with skateboard wheels hold the bike upright until it's moving fast enough to balance on its own.  This is a proven, if non-graceful solution that soon pays off in not keeling over on the start line of races.

That's certainly how it was done when I did a few BHPC races in the mid 90s.

And is still commonly a feature.  They tend to be the ones with a stronger track record for decking it on the start.

I was going to ask if the visibility was as bad as it looks. I suppose whatever lens is on the camera makes the field of vision so terribly narrow, but the reflections and blurrs... I don't think I'd cope with them.
