POI file creation on Linux
« on: 09 February, 2015, 10:29:20 am »
I've been using Ubuntu 14LTS for a while now and would like to update my POI files to include a few more of the local coffee shops I've grown fond of. However, as usual, the Garmin POI loader only works on Windows. While I could dig out my ageing Windows Laptop I'd prefer to stick to my main machine and also not deal with the pain of a VM.

What's the best way to generate POI files on Linux? I have found http://www.gps-data-team.com/ is there anything better out there? Does anyone have a link to documentation of the POI file format? May be I could just write my own.

GPSBabel can convert to Garmin POI (.gpi) format. http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/fmt_garmin_gpi.html

Thanks. After heaving a sigh and starting to dust off a C compiler, I decided to try the lazy way first and found that the windows version installed under Wine. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks OK.
