For those seeking a 'quick fix' the new series of 'Great British Railway Journeys' includes a visit to a Lake District pencil manufacturer, I'm sorry, I missed the name . . .

Should be available on i-player very shortly.

He also visited the Yard-O-Led Pencil Co in Birmingham a couple of years ago. I don't think that will still be on iPlayer but watch out for a repeat.

By a Sherlockian process of inductive deduction I found the leads for my Staedtler Mars Micro in a forgotten corner of my rucksack where they have lain unseen since April 2014.

I bet they have the wrong USB connector

Are mechanical pencils allowed here?

Lots of mechanical pencils are rubbish. Here is one that is not rubbish, and is also free - if you spend a piffling £40 at Cult Pens. In fact, the £40 total can include the cost of the soon-to-be-free pencil.

Need I say more? No. But I will add that it writes superbly, and that the twisting action described above does indeed work.

Okay, I'm tempted.  Which is silly, as I can't remember the last time I used a pencil for anything other than carpentry.

I use them all the time, very effective at writing on damp notepads on the side of a Cumbrian hill or the deck of a monsoon ridden FPSO. I tend to keep the more modest versions of propelling pencils though, and not averse to swiping the disposables from hotels.

Have just completed my first tech drawing on tracing paper after more years than I care to remember, for domestic use. Used a Rotring Ticky 0.5 HB pencil for initial drafting lines. The leads provided in these are a dark and horrible HB which does not erase cleanly at all in comparison with say, a Pentel HB insert.  (and why can't I find a 0.7mm which are much stronger?)

Here you go:

0.7 or 0.35 or 1 for that matter.

Uni Nano Dia leads are quite good. Smooth and stronger than normal leads.

Cult pens are ace but bad for the wallet.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I just received this beauty from Cult Pens along with a load of Lamy roller ball refills:

Its an Ohto Super Promecha !

What a name and its all metal with a choice of four lead sizes. I got my usual 0.7mm.

I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Ooo, a Pencil thread.

I used to do all my maths degree scripts in pencil because I just preferred it that way. I hate doing sums with ink sticks

Anyway, here's a special number pencil

Yup.  IME, many geologists use pencils and the Chartwell field books (#2647 was my favourite) because they work in the rain when pens and ordinary books don't.  And also surveyors when they need to write things down out on site.  I had loads of these with my borehole and trial pit soil and rock sample descriptions and groundwater level data from half the globe.

Like Beardy, I did nearly all my uni work in pencil (much to the chagrin of my Director of Studies).  When you're doing sums (or trying to do TRICKY sums), it's so much more reassuring when you know that if you cock it up a bit you won't have to resort to (i) starting again, or (ii) unleashing a 'woolly bear' (what my schoolmate James used to call a crossing-out).
