Tour of Britain 2022
« on: 03 September, 2022, 07:01:34 pm »
Starts tomorrow  full live on ITV 4 during the day, with highlights in the evening.

We rode through the finish for stage 1 at Glenshee this morning (and had a very reasonably priced pie at the cafe); that's a beautiful road and it should be an awesome finale to the day.

Looking forward to some good racing, doesn't look like any team has a lineup that will dominate this year so it's up for grabs. A good distribution of stages across the country too.

Mr Smith plans to stroll up the hill on Tuesday and watch them pass through Esh on their way from Durham to Chapel Fell and beyond.
(We're mostly curious what Esh looks like without all those cars parked along the road).

Looking out the window in Aberdeen, yes, it's wet. Going to be a lovely day for a bike ride.

Stage 3 goes within 3 miles of home (before Chapel Fell) and I can't go as I'm having first cataract op on Monday!
First year for many that I haven't been able to ride out and watch in the Pennines or Cumbria....

ITV4 seems to be showing an old episode of The Sweeny, despite the EPG claiming its the Tour.

Whats that all about?
Am I doing something wrong?

ToB passes on part of my commute on Friday, and along the road at the top of my road. I have an invitation to ride the closed road route into Gloucester on Friday...but I'll be at work  >:(

Hey, Same here in Kirrie so no, unless we're both doing something wrong.
Still showing highlights due at 8pm?
Coverage due on GCN from 1pm.
Erm... the stage hasn't been cancelled has it? The weather's not that bad.

Most likely because of a lack of helicopter relay for the tv signals. Freeview guide is saying it’s the Sweeney…

Apparently the main TV hub is at the finish at Glenshee, and they can't get it up and running due to high winds.
The race is apparently not delayed, just the TV coverage.

I'm glad I'm not out in that, it's proper 'orrible.

Whoda thunk it, high winds at the top of Glenshee?

Live coverage started at 1240 apparently.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Was at the finish and it was a great day out. Big screen made it look great and was impressed by how fast they came up the hill.

Also amazing how fast they moved away.Tom Pidcock was on the podium and about 3 mins later away down the hill in the bus. I guess with a 2.5-3hr transfer to Hawick, they need to get going. Also seeing the world tour "haves" with their luxury coaches and the "have nots" with minibuses and trailers.

Today was great weather and a good day out. Amazing that it ended up the way it did following that scenic finish over the last 20k or so. Looking at the results I was surprised the first group was so large. Apparently tomorrow one forecast is for the bad stuff to hit around Kom and a fast descent. That'll be fun...

Conditions were somewhat challenging out there today. Had a nice chat with an old boy just after the top of Chapel Fell whilst waiting for them to catch up. Felt sorry for him stood there in the wind shivering wearing just his cycling kit. It was really cold up there. Then rain started, and we had thunder and ligtening.

Very soggy, hard conditions. And now, back in Durham, there's blue skies.

Looking forward to actually watching today's stage, with the splits and stragglers at the end it must have been be pretty brutal for them.

Fantastic day today. Really fast first half - comment over the radio was "they've had four Weetabix AND three shredded wheat for breakfast"  ;D

That single track was amazing and some really technical twisties and switchbacks.

I have two opportunities to see them on Friday. I think I shall just take the first one.

Several years ago they came within 80 m of my house, but I was away working.  >:(

Sadly, you won't be watching it at all.

What a nutty country. Should all subjects be dressed in black forevermore like an Italian widow?

STATEMENT
THURSDAY 8 SEPTEMBER 2022
Further to the earlier statement in relation to the cancellation of stage six as a mark of respect following the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, the organisers of the AJ Bell Tour of Britain can additionally confirm that stages seven (Dorset) and eight (Isle of Wight) will not take place.
This decision has been taken in consultation with stakeholders and partners in light of operational circumstances, including the understandable reassignment of police resource at this time.
Therefore, the final standings will be taken following the conclusion of stage five on Thursday 8 September. The winner of the AJ Bell Tour of Britain 2022 will be Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar Team).
Additionally, the respective classification leaders – Tom Pidcock (Dodl by AJ Bell points), Mathijs Paasschens (ŠKODA King of the Mountains) and Matthew Teggart (Sportsbreaks.com Sprints) – will also be declared the winners of those competitions.
The Tour of Britain organisation, alongside the teams, riders and officials involved in the event, send their deepest condolences to the Royal Family at this sad time.
– Ends –

Police resource is a major driver. Not many motorbike police left, especially those qualified for escort duties.
