Royal Mail, I have the greatest respect for you, and my own local postie is great. But "the final collection from this postbox will be no earlier than 0900" is not helpful. If I post something after 0900, I have no idea whether I've missed the day's collection or I'm in time for it.

I think there's a trend for very early 'final collections' everywhere. We have a box with an afternoon final collection about half a mile away and partner often posts things therein. You might have one too...
Round here they all used to be last collections between 1700 and 1800, which was great because you knew if you'd missed it.

That's a lot more open than my bank.

It is currently 10-12 Monday morning only in the playing fields car park.
A mobile bank.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

And even if it did, that only tells me I've missed it once I'm at the postbox. Knowing the last collection is at 1730 means I know if I've missed it before I get there.

It's snail mail.  The postbox lost its markings years ago, so you put your item in, and worry about it in a week or so if it doesn't seem to have arrived.  Anything more urgent is too critical for normal post, and would probably be better sent as a fax or something.

my local branch is 20 miles away.  I've never been.

I think I'm still technically registered in Solihull

My bank branch is in Sheffield. I might have visited once since I left South Yorkshire in 1984...

Mine is still in Liverpool from my student days. I think I went in twice, once to open the account (£50!) and the second time when it seemed like a bright idea to go expand my overdraft between pints. As the bank chap pointed out, it wouldn't have cleared in time for the next round.

I'm surprised the curious tradition of spending lunch hours queuing in the bank has persisted so long. Other than in the US where banking is still a bit odd.

Mother regularly visits her branch of Barclays and queues up to withdraw cash.

My account with the Natwest used to be in St.Reatham, then it got moved to somewhere like Chatham, cos that's convenient for a South London resident.
I don't think I've set foot in the St.Reatham branch since the mid 80s.

Though I was an early adopter for cash cards (personalised punched pieces of plastic, each liberating £20, swallowed by the machine and later returned by Royal Mail) I did queue for cash at the University branch as a student.

The Sheffield University branch of Williams and Glyn's Bank closed before I finished my studies, I think.

Similarly, mine's in Durham: I haven't been there for a long time.

I do have a local branch, but it's very rarely open when I'm free to go.

I still have a bank account in Bangalore. I haven't even been to India for almost six years. I think I left about 300 rupees in it (around £3.50).

Does that mean I'll have to go out and mow the nettles/brambles?  Dammit.

Nah, turn the nettles into tea and leave the brambles for blackberries. Or don't.

This is the wrong way round.  You shouldn't really be surprised that your lawn needs mowing - most lawns spend the entire winter in need of mowing.  We used not to be able to get ours mown until whenever a windy, sunny, dry weekend day came along, which very often wasn't until April, at which point the grass was way too long to dry properly and lift into the mower.  The last few winters, though, we've let our geese into the garden to graze from time to time to keep it manageable.  There's been surprisingly little collateral damage.

Does that mean I'll have to go out and mow the nettles/brambles?  Dammit.

I remember when 300 rupees was £19.

What is this thing with manufacturers making rear lights that are USB charged and held on with an elastic band? I just want a sturdy mount, decent side visibility, good waterproofing and AA batteries, why is that so hard?
