Simon Richardson MBE run over by van
« on: 17 August, 2011, 07:58:33 pm »
A gold medal-winning Paralympic cyclist has suffered multiple injuries after being involved in a hit-and-run crash with a van near Bridgend.

If you don't know who Simon is, he only started competing in the paralympics after being left partially paralysed from being run over by a car in 2001.

Lightning never strikes twice, but White Van Man does.

It was the lead story on BBC Wales News tonight, he has multiple spinal fractures, a broken hip and only one functioning lung. This sounds worse than his original accident.

The driver of the van has been arrested - I hope he can rustle up the £200 fine that's coming his way.  >:(

It sounds really nasty doesn't it.  Still the lead story on Welsh news.

On the plus side, he was given an MBE for being a tough bugger so if anyone can pull through it, he can.

Driver improvement course instead?

How about ripping his liver out through an improvised hole in his neck?

That really is a classical punishment. Do they have vultures in Wales?

Some good news filtering out, hope his progress continues.

Simons out of sedation. He's pretty groggy, a little confused and starting to come to terms with what's happened to him.  His wife Amanda, who continues to do the 50 mile round trip twice a day, said that the powerful drugs that Simon has been given will take a few days to work out of his system, until then it's just about "taking each day as it comes."

He's very tired for obvious reasons, his body has absorbed significant trauma and is drawing all its' resources to the recovery process. Medical staff are satisfied with his progress, despite his status continuing to be critical but stable.  Cyclists and observors continue to send huge support to Simon, this weekend Team UK Youth rode with #SIMONSTRONG labels on their helmets - awesome stuff.

Wales Today said they'd be interviewing him tonight, the clip is already on the BBC website: Paralympian Simon Richardson vows to return to cycling.

Worth watching.

News on the court case

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-east-wales-19178359

I reckon they should throw the book at him, but who's betting he'll get a £50 fine and 3 points?  He said he was blinded by the sun after all.

Guilty of dangerous driving. To be sentenced on 30 August.

Twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood, and "... could not read a number plate from 4m (about 13ft) away and could only partially read one from 2m (6.5ft)", and that was wearing his glasses.  Unbelievable.

Various claims about thinking he'd hit a sheep, and was blinded by sunlight, but then he hid the vehicle?  It sounds like he's lying through his teeth at every opportunity, and hopefully the courts will see this and throw the book at him.
Actually, it is rocket science.

Sadly the max sentence for dangerous driving is only 2 years.

Not sure what you would have to do to get that - it's difficult to see how this guy could have behaved much worse >:(

In September, Mr Richardson will undergo a complicated operation to his spine that will take up to a year to recover from.
But after that he has set his sights on next Paralympics in Rio in 2016.
"I've done it before and I know I can do it again," he said.

The driver was over the drink drive limit. Driving under the influence can carry a much higher sentence.  I'm shocked that there was no charge of perverting the course of justice (he claimed he had hit a sheep, but had hidden his van in a barn).  Tokens  >:( >:( >:(

I agree, it wasn't an ordinary charge of dangerous driving, it was the fact that he was drunk and tried to escape a crime scene and hide evidence that made it much more serious imho.

All the best to Simon in his recovery.
