There's one further detail I didn't mention earlier, but will do now seeing as it has a happy ending after all...

When I picked myself up from the river, dusted myself off and inspected the bike I remember thinking that I came off very lightly indeed - a bit of pond weed on the left pedal and a bruise on my left hip.

It was about 40 yards up the road that I realised I was no longer wearing my wedding ring!  :o :'( :-[ :-[

I spent the next 45 minutes or so squelching up and down the ford conducting a fingertip search of the area (there's an impressive scrape in the slime cover from the pedal, BTW), to no avail, then set off home, wondering if that was where I lost it after all - I started to think that maybe it came off in the pub when I took my mitts off (a quick perusal of del's photos confirms that wasn't the case).

We returned to the ford this morning, and between myself, Mrs O. and the little O's managed to find it.  :D
Darkness, mud, slime, a ring calling to you...

Precioussss!

And lots of us have fallen foul of Nutty's slimed bottom.

Phew, glad you found your ring, it would have been really sad if you'd lost it.

I don't wear a wedding ring as before we got married I asked The Current Mrs R if I could be let off wearing a ring as I find them uncomfortable. Jokingly I suggested matching tattoos. She thought it was a splendid idea and my arse is forever hers and hers is mine!

Sounds like you had a good ride. What's the plan for next week?

What's the plan for next week?
I think we should make a list of a dozen pubs and visit them in order, one per week, and when we get to the end we just repeat the series. Just turn up at the appointed time, 2000 - 2030 hrs, have a drink and a chat. All welcome and no pressure on turning up every week.

Great minds ...

This is kind of what I envisaged.

That's a bit ambitious, isn't it Del? But I'm game...

There are, of course plenty of old favourites, but we could mix in some new places.

Having said that, I doubt there are any pubs in mid Essex that none of us have ever been to  :P
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

I bet there are. That sounds like an interesting challenge though.

Hmmmm, a ride, a pub, beer, a ride off route, comedy falling off, losing something and having to find it the next day. You don't get that kind of thing happening on the Pompey rides, they are purely for training.

 ;)

Perhaps we should have a twinning ceremony, Pompey and Chompsford? And fraternal greetings from the pub every Wednesday evening?

Sadly, I'll be attending only a few of these as I "work" up to 7.30 most Wednesdays, school hols apart.

The slimed bottom made me snigger.

Sorry.

Did somebody say there might be another ride this week?  <pricks up ears>

Tempted... but I probably won't be out of work early and my legsies are still a bit dull and unresponsive from recent riding.  The closer to Saaarfend the better for me  :)

Seeing as there's little interest (plus the fact that the weather is a bit minging) maybe we should go for next week? Maybe one of the pubs in the Hanningfields to keep it nice and central for all of us?

I'm going to spend the evening snoozing in front of a hot computer.

Considering I'm still at work and the weather is, to quote bobb, minging, I think that this week is definitely orf.

I'm not sure of my availability next week  :-\

I wasn't able to do tonight (or get to the internet to proclaim same until now), but I'd definitely be up for a jaunt out next week.  the Hanningfields somewhere would be very cool.

It sort of has to be done, just for the date (9.9.9).  Oh, and I do believe Oscar's Dad may have mentioned he would be available for that night too.

I'd say it has to be either the East Hanningfield Windmill or the West Hanningfield Compasses then. I know the Windmill better and it usually has Brewer's Gold on. The Compasses is OK though. Maybe Del can offer an opinion?

I think that trains should have wing mirrors so that they can overtake safely.

Anyone up for a ride on Wednesday?  I have a nice 36 mile route in mind with ford (swimming) and pub opportunities.  Or, I'm more than happy to follow someone else's back wheel.
