Not 100% sure yet. I'll be wanting something reasonably cheap + robust for first fish in the tank, preferably non live bearers as I'm not wanting to deal with loads of tiny weans yet!
There is absolutely no reason why you need to worry about tiny weans. The other fish will eat them and be happy for a bit of live bate. Fish being fish, the parents will have forgotten all about it in a few seconds time and they wont hold a grudge against either the other fish or you. They just get on with the task of making more.
Creating an environment where fish are relaxed and stress free, to the point that they readily breed, is what you should be aiming for. Seeing courting rituals, nest building, eggs, gravid bodies and live born babies is a very good indication that your fish are happy and you're doing a good job. It does not in any way, put on you the burden of responsibility to segregate fish, set up spawning tanks and feed through eye droppers six times a day.
I used to keep fish when I was a kid and got all sorts of things to spawn. It was always a pleasurable achievement to see a new species do the business but only because it confirmed to me, I was doing my part correctly. I have often thought it would be nice to keep fish again. They are easy things to live with, pretty, relaxing, fairly cheap to set up and don't require a great deal of skill or effort to maintain. Rather than a community fish tank, I think I would like to set up a specific environment and keep a few specimen fish with real characters.
